Aust. bike import w/o carnet? false info?!

Hi all,

i read the adventure motorcycling handbook and the author wrote something about importing the bike into australia with a carnet else pay a 24% deposit or something and get for a VIA, (vehicle import approval), before shipping over to australia.

i went to this website:

Importing Vehicles to Australia

then i email them at

Imports.Vehicle@infrastructure.gov.au

Dear Sir/Mdm,

I am a citizen of Singapore and would like to import my motorbike to australia for travel purpose of 3 months. I would be arriving at sydney on 26 November 2009 and will leave from Darwin to East Timor with the bike 3 months later.

I had obtained a tourist visa.

I would like to obtain a vehicle approval (VIA) form from you as stated by the website importing a motor vehicle

Thank you for helping in our travel in Australia.

Hello,

In regards to your email, unfortunately there's nothing you come under for Import Approval, this is only for 3 months & your on a Tourist Visa as well, i would see if you cna get a Carnet Depassage for the Automobile Association of your side form Singapore, if successfull will aloow you to stay upto 12 months.

Please see attached the link to the Depts Website for further information,

Regards,
Wayne

Hi Goh,

You are unable to import the vehicle with a VIA as a temporary resident. You will need to apply for a Carnet De Passage through your Automotive Association.

Regards,
Tim C

then again, i check from the Automobile association of australia webpage about importing without a carnet:
http://www.aaa.asn.au/touring/bringing.htm#withoutcarnet

i had used the carnet a year ago and it had already expired sometime ago where i had sent it back home and got my deposit back. currently i am in USA and had bought the air tickets LA to sydney in 26 november 2009.

is there something that i can do? the automobile association of singapore can't let someone apply the carnet on my behalf without me and the bike being at singapore first. to go thro the process of banker's garentee is a pain again also.

is there someway i can get the bike in with a tourist visa and without a carnet?

please advise.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
