Arriving in Australia
 

Hi there, i'm wondering if you know how much money can i bring with me when i arrive in Australia, my sister told me something about AUD 10000 , if you carry more money like AUD 15000 do they apply any tax to that money?

I don't know this for sure, but I don't think there is a limit. I think the Oz govt. would be very happy for you to spend that much money in their country, so why tax it?

But, do you really want to carry that much cash? Get a debit or credit card, better a Visa AND a MasterCard, load up the account before you leave and you will have access to money in any town. If you loose a card you still have your money...

Try checking the AUS govt. web sites, e.g. customs.

You have to declare amounts above 10K. This is just to monitor money laundering and the like. No tax. But if go in with 10 mil and leave with 20 there'll be questions and you'll probably have to pay tax on the difference. People take in more than that from the Middle East for a long weekend.

Access to ATM's and such is pretty easy in Australia, so like the others have already said it wouldn't really be necessary to bring in such a large amount of cash. If you were staying for a few months and still wanted to bring in a lump sum, I'd suggest opening an account with one of the banks. It would give you access to the EFTPOS (electronic payment) facilities used pretty much everywhere for everything.

Just be aware of the bank charges, you'll need to pay a small (ish) monthly account fee if you want to avoid paying a charge for even the most trivial thing. (like breathing whilst on bank premises for example) :cool4:
