Anne Beadell Highway
 

Hi Everybody

We plan to ride the Anne Beadell Highway beginning of April. Does anybody know, if Talaringa Well is dry or of if there is water? How about the water tanks on the three campsites?

there are also maps from Mapwest which usually have a lot of details about camp sites.

Anne Beadell Highway
has a few local phone numbers of people who might help. It also states no water from Coober Pedy to the Ilkulka Roadhouse.

Biggest problem will be up to date info, as I doubt that too many people have done the road over Summer. Relying on bores or wells in The Outback is not safe - there are a 100 reasons why they dont work when you need them, or more likely the water is fouled with a dead animal.

Try Bonzle for some reasonable maps which you can select bores, wells and rivers.

Thanks a lot for your useful information. In fact we allready did a lot of preparations for the Anne Beadell Highway (we also got these maps), but the question about Talaringa Well remained unclear. Of course we will not rely on sources like wells and bores, but the presence of water would make our lives more comfortable.

I think, we will get information about the water tanks on the campsites 3 and 4 latest in the Ilkurlka roadhouse.

Tallaringa Well is not dry any more
 

Hi Everybody

Unfortunately we had to postpone the Anne Beadell Highway to a later trip.

But as we came along Coober Pedy, we decided to visit at least Emu, where the British test exploded two atom bombs in the 1950's. On our way we came along Tallaringa Well and as stated by different people, the well was indeed dry. But as we had plenty of time, we decided to dig it out again.
Had we known in advance, that we would have to dig more than two meters, we probably wouldn't even have started. However, after more than four hours we stroke water in a deph of more than three meters.
As Len Beadell allready found out more than 50 years ago, the water is not suitable for drinking. Probably it could be filtered, but we did not try, as we had plenty of fresh water with us. What remains unclear is how long it will take until the well is silted up again.
So Tallaringa Well is still absolutely no reliable source of water at all!
