9,600 km fence in oz???

i'm wondering if anyone can solve a 'fence' question for me, is there a dingo fence that stretches east / west across australia?

for some silly reason, i'm thinking it would be cool to follow one of these fences with a motorbike (and lots of water, haha)

i have read on the dingo fence which goes from the east coast down to the south coast which is 5000 km long and have read on the rabbit proof fence on the west coast, running north / south.

i have also seen sites talking about a 9,600 km fence that goes across all of australia but no proof has been given. no pictures or maps.

can anyone confirm such a fence please?

and can anyone follow these fences if they are so inclined to do so? i understand u need a 4x4 vehicle loaded with water and petrol. if permission is needed, who do u get it from?

thanks in advance!!

ps, some sites claim australia has the longest structure in the world (dingo fence that is 5,200 km long) but the great wall of china is 6,000 km long so what are they talking aboot?

sort of.

more or less.

there is a long fence in australia, running from the great aust. bight in south australia up into queensland. keeps the dingos from chewing their way through the sheep, so that the sheep can keep chewing their way through the sparse ground cover, thereby allowing the precious topsoil to blow into the pacific. but i digress.

don't know how long it is off the top of my head but several thousand km. no such thing as a fence across the paddock. road, railway, yes, fence no.

there are many epic trips in aust, by all means include the fence in your explorations but i wouldn't make it a feature of your ride. it's just made of wire, after all. oh yeah, please shut the gate.

The dog fence is only about 6000kms long, maybe by adding in a few rabbit fences in Western Australia you can get 9600kms in total.

There are good dirt roads either side of the dog fence for maintenance. I'm not sure if they are all public access roads. The sections in South Australia go through or near the old rocket ranges/nuclear sites and I have a dim memory that you may require a permit to travel through that area.

Have a look at the expolreoz.com.au website where I'm sure someone can help with some very detailed info on riding the fence.

so, what is the right fact? its 5400km or 9600km long?
after a lot of googling it seems that there is NO fence that runs east/west across australia.
a pity they don't allow u to travel this fence though :mchappy:

Sorry but
Dog/rabit fence along the NSW/Queensland and NSW/SA borders are not public access ...
too many near misses with the tourists almost hiting the maintance vehicles...

Dingo Fence

Here is some info on the dingo fence. You can see it in small sections only.

The dingo fence - world's longest fence

The dingo fence ran through our place.

We had a cattle/sheep/farming property between Roma and Taroom in South West Queensland which had as one of its boundries the Dingo Barrier Fence. And it was definitely not a route open to the public. You would have to get approval from every landowner that the fence crosses. Also back then we had to do all the maintenance ourselves. If you managed to get permission from the landowners you would then have millions of gates to open and close.

Then again the last time I was there was in 1972. It may of changed since then.
