where to find a cheap lhd 4x4?

I'm trying to organise an entry in the Plymoth-Dakar challenge, particuarly the timbuktu challenge, but i can't think where to find a vehicle.

For those who don't know the general idea is to buy a cheap vehicle, drive it to west africa and then put it up for auction for local charity.

I had been thinking of a small van or car but while that is fine for Bamako, to reach Timbuktu the organisers require a 4x4. Oh, and it has to be left hand drive to be legally sold.

So apart from e-bay can anyone suggest a place to find a cheap ute. I was thinking of something like a hilux or a older landrover.

thanks.

Hi, I did the Timbuktu Challenge last year.......what an experience!! My sister and me were in a 20yr old Niva and would def do the same again. Having the 4x4 took some stress out of a few situations, but is certainly not essential. Cars that made the drive from Douentza upto Timbuktu included a Vauxhall Astra, Nissan Vannette, Volvo Estate etc etc etc.
There were a couple of fairly good 4x4's on the run, but, (IMO) they lost a lot of the spirit of the event. You would probably have fewer 'remind me why i'm doing this' moments in a Hilux or Landy, but, for the sheer experience of it you can't beat taking something a bit out of the ordinary!!
Anyway, sorry to come off topic a bit!!
eBay, c’est vous! Achetez et vendez vos objets neufs ou d’occasion
eBay: Neue und gebrauchte Elektronikartikel, Autos, Kleidung, Sammlerstücke, Sportartikel und mehr – alles zu günstigen Preisen
Voiture occasion, vente et achat voiture, auto occasion, annonce auto gratuite
They should all be worth a look
Good luck, you'll have a ball!!

p.s. There are a few of our videos on youtube, just search Niva Say Never

All the best

Unless you're looking to take a specific vehicle for a specific cause I'd steer clear of the 4WD for the PBC - it does as stated earlier ruin the spirit of the event. I did it in a LR110 that I managed to obtain for free, and to be honest I wish I'd done it in a RWD vehicle something like a Merc or Volvo.

However looking on the continent I'd recommend trying AutoScout24 Europas Automarkt für Gebrauchtwagen und Neuwagen

For Swiss based vehicles Auto Occasion suchen Autos kaufen im Automarkt von AutoScout24.ch

There is a Discovery on there at the moment - that is being sold by a recovery company - looks in good condition - and has recently had a lot of maintenance on it - by the advert description.

Not sure how a non-res can export though.

Hi I did the Banjul challenge in feb 07 in a £91 misubishi shogun, i found lots of lhd cars in the free ads, try a google search for free ads papers.

we drove the desert route on our own using chris scotts waypoints, a group that took a guide ended up loosing a team for 3days..!

have fun go slow and enjoy it.!
