What tyres
 

I did ask before, did get one reply, But now cant find my subject, so May I ask again, I want to know what are the best tyres to be used in the Sahara, sand etc.....for my Range Rover overlander, fair bit of weight, as expected, so what high sided wall tyre and can i get in UK? please help

Hi Dave,
I bought Michelin AT's for my Discovery when we went in 2004. I then drove the rest of the year on them and then went back again on them this year. They started with about 12mm of tread and now have about 10mm. Only problem I've had with them was back here when I got a self tapper in one of them.
I bought them off a listed Michelin dealer for £100 each for five. They performed well on sand and piste sometimes down as low as 20psi. The guy that recommended them to me said that in 15 years of going to the desert he's never had a puncture in a Michelin. In terms of size I'm told that footprint length is as important as width.
I think mine were 225/75/16.

i used michelin AT for a trip fom uk to capetown ...also put in anti puncture "gunge"..no puncture all the way..im not sure what the moral is!!

Correct me if I'm wrong but the pictures of your car show BF Goodrich AT tyres on lovely steel rims. The same combo as me except i put the white writing on the inside of the tyre...

Yes but BF GOODRICH ATs... not MICHELIN ATs as you mentioned above.

TYPO!!!!! never have a few beers and try and be clever....definately BFG's...i will now go and check to see that the car was a land rover er..land cruiser...i wondder if i could buy a brain on e bay!!!!!!!!

Hi Dave,

I used, and still use the same BFG All-Terrains on my Range Rover overlander. Put them on in the UK about a year before I left for my trip and did about 15,000 miles in the UK. They coped admirably with overloading throughout the sandy bits on the way too (Sahara, Kalahari & Namib).

In 40,000 miles they've had two punctures - a sidewall cut through by a flint in Namibia and a nail through the tread in Ghana. I'm still using them here in South Africa, although they're looking a little tyred now...

They're in a 235/70/16 size. The only place I would have wanted some mud terrains was after crossing the border from Nigeria to Cameroon in the rains. Apart from that an AT is fine.
