Wanderlust maps any good for big truck

Hello,

I was wondering if the wanderlust GPS maps are any good for big 4x4 trucks (especially Africa). I hear a lot of bikers only have good comments about it but I never hear 4x4 drivers about this.

Does anyone have any experience with Wanderlust? And did it work in a 4X4 for you?

That's only because Bob's a biker and hangs out on biker website, but he DOES have a 4x4. A map is a map....

What part of Africa?
Africa itself is poorly covered by any of the 'world maps' at the moment .. the wanderlust one is getting better .. but
beter detail is avalible in the south from 'Tracks 4 Africa' .. and there are some 'free' maps around for other parts of Africa...

Looraine,

A map is a map but with a bike you can go almost anywhere but my truck is 2.35m wide 7m long and 3.9m high.
So what I meant is: Is it specific for bikers or, do I get a surprise after every corner that I have to cut down trees and blast away mountains or are they mostly maps of "normal open wide" roads.

Frank,

I want to go down africa the west side and up the east side.

No problem for trucks

The Wanderlust map doesn't do just single track that would be difficult to navigate in a truck. The type of road is reasonably well differentiated so that you shouldn't get too stuck!

I had both Tracks 4 Africa and Wanderlust going down the normal Cairo to Cape Town route and I personally thought that the level of detail, especially for the southern half, was much better in Tracks 4 Africa IMHO.

The level of detail on the Wanderlust maps .. or Garmin world map ... well it gives you teh main major roads .. not the single tracks .. unless those have been contributed by someone .. and those should be well enough identified .. So i don't hink that will be teh problem .. more likely the inaccuracy and lack of deatil will.

I'd recoment Tracks 4 Africa .. they have the southern bits well covered .. lacking in teh north ..

Island Oafs MorrocoTopo is an exclent map .. for Morocco.

and you'll find some good maps on cgpsmapper toos - Dacar, Gabon IIRC, umm and one other .. you'll need to generate the preview files for those though .. bit of work .. but can be done ..

We are currently using it on our trip (in a 4x4). So far, we;ve covered Eastern russia, Mongolia and now in Central Asia. It's been very accurate in some place, and in other instances not so accurate. Was very useful in Mongolia.

We will use this and Tracks4Africa in Africa. I'm definitely happy with it, and for the minimal price, definitely worth it.

Henk Jan,
Ahhhhh, now I see what you mean. Can't give you that info, but having toured a lot in East Africa in a Land Rover for five years, I can't recall one road I had to reverse on because of bad conditions. If the locals can do it, so can you. :-)
