UK to N. Africa travel budget

I'm just starting to make plans for my first overlanding trip into N. Africa next spring and am trying to get an idea of the costs involved.

I'm aiming to be traveling in a fully prepped 95-97 diesel 80 series Landcruiser which I will prepare myself and know all the costs for that.

What I am trying to establish is the rough fuel and ferry costs for driving the vehicle through France and Spain and then across to N. Africa and then spending about 3-4 weeks driving around Morrocco and possibly down to Mauri.

I'm also trying to establish the average daily living expenses per person whilst out there assuming one night in 5 is spent in a local hotel.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

How many nights are you looking to stop on the way down, and what sort of luxury?

Camping, cheap hotel, restaurant food will all make a substancial difference.

We spent around £3000 on a similar trip to Tunisia (family of 4), but I reckon that we spent as much on 5 days in France as we did for 17 nights in Tunisia. The £3000 included insurance, ferries, tolls, diesel, food, hotels, etc.
Look on www.4x4-travel.co.uk, on the links page there are websites for ferries and hotels.

Julian

We are planning a longer trip (London - Cape Town) in early 2007 see www.langebaan-sunset.com and have been spening a lot of time looking at budgets from a variety of sources.

Some of the personal 4x4 overlander sites present "real" budget data from past trips (BigSky is a good one). You might be able to "guestimate" based on this data for your portion of the trip. Maybe others might post more accurate budget data for you as this thread develops.

Hi, thanks for the feedback.

I'm currently working on around 3 weeks travel in Morrocco and about 3-4 days for the cross Europe trip, so just over 4 weeks in all.

Chatting elsewhere I get the impression that I could probably do the trip on my own for about £1500 with 75% of that being spent on fuel although if I want to be a bit more relaxed about it budget for about £2000.

I'm hoping a friend will come along as well so we are looking to budget £1-1.5k each for the trip.

We would expect to spend about one night in 5 in a hotel or guest house in Morrocco and probably stay with friends on the way down France.

I think that sounds about right. Any other comments?
