Total Cost of Ownership for Expedition Vehicles
 

Introduction
When you discuss the purchase of an overland expedition vehicle (OEV), typically the only costs mentioned are the purchase cost and the options cost. Very rarely, ongoing operational costs are mentioned. You will probably never hear anyone discuss the costs of selling of the OEV when they are done using it. Unfortunately for potential and current owners, the purchase price is only a small portion of the total costs of the ownership experience with an OEV.

The critical perspective that is missing from almost every OEV purchase is not the simple cost of the vehicle and its options but the total cost of ownership (TCO) of the vehicle over the entire time span of ownership experience.

As I said in another post already, it's probably cool to setup a website with facts and stories/opinions about Overlanders vehicles. It might be nice to discuss various vehicles, from Citroen 2CV to a 6-wheel overland expedition truck on a dedicated website for that.

Here's a resource that does some of that. It's USA based, so North American oriented. In other words, lots and lots about Toyotas but not much about 2CVs unless I post a shot of one we see out here. There is plenty of 6x6 and 8x8 lust, however.

It's somewhat a mirror image of HU, with the 95% emphais on 4/6/8/etc. wheeled vehicles and the 5% on bikes.

Hey, This site is not easy to find! I searched for a forum for overlanders in cars, 2wd/4wd etc for quite some time!

But then still, it's nice to create a list of vehicles with descriptions about them. In a forum it becomes blurry when everyone is posting on topics.
Well, IMHO it's still nice to have a page with vehicle descriptions.

That's a cool topic you're talking about. I'll post some of my overlanders vehicles too. This could be a nice bas to discuss the pros and cons of certain vehicles too, added with experiences of (previous) owners.

Click on the "Our Guests" years to see photos and descriptions of the people traveling with each vehicle. It's a great lesson about how you can overland in just about anything.

I am confident your contributions would be very welcomed. A non-USA perspective on overlanding vehicles can be very informative and educational.

I am nearing the end of a trip in a Landcruiser 80 series (overlandcruiser.net)

I was advised by footloose4x4.com to budget for GBP 40 per day on the road, once the vehicle had been bought and prepared. Throughout the trip, it's been pretty close to that on average. Maybe GBP 45 to 50 per day would be a more realistic figure if I were to repeat the trip today, given the fuel price rises whilst I've been on the road.

We have a 110 landrover defender- we get it serviced at Landrover garages whenever possible, change our filters and oils every 3 to 6 thousand miles and maintain her well.
We have calculated the fuel costs, servicing costs and spare part costs for our trip- 513 days.
We have spent 7.50 pounds a day.
Seems a lot less than what other people average but I guess it depends on where in the world you are. We have had cheap fuel and Landrover garages for a lot of our trip. Hope this helps.

Clarification - the GBP 40 I mentioned before covered the cost of EVERYTHING since I have been on the road. Strip out the hotels, food, drink and clothes etc and the cost of purely fuel, oil and spares (not that the Landcruiser has needed many inshallah) and it would be more like GBP 10 to 15 per day.
