Does anyody here have any experience of taking a trailer through Central Asia and Russia? from a paperwork point of view?

I have been told I need registration documents for the trailer for it to enter Russia, but as you may be aware there is no need for trailers to be registered in the UK so I therefore have no paperwork.

I have emailed the russian embassy but I dont think they understood what I was asking, I asked again and got no reply.

I have thought of mocking up a V5 to match the military plate and making up the military numberplate to match (its a sankey) but I dont really want to do this!

any thoughts

and no, not taking it is not an option.

maybe you can put it on your carnet?? I did it with a motorbike that was not registered

I dont think I need a Carnet for Central Asia/Russia. I will need one for Aus when I finally get there, but I was hopeing to hold out on that so I could make it last as long as possible.

Do you have to 'temp import' the vehicle when entering Russia, or just register it for the duration of the visa?

the only reason this has all come about is because I know someone who was asked for papers for their trailer and was refused entry until they ditched the trailer and tried the border again.

Have a look through Yellow Pages for UK transport companies or coach tour companies (Overlanders, Kontiki ??) that do UK to Russia work (if any), quick phone call, state your problem to the transport manager and they would know instantly what is needed.

I know a family who trailered with a 78 through C Asia a couple of years ago on the way to China. They didn't mention trailer paperwork hassles.

Google <sambor africa twin> - he takes trailers of bikes from Poland to C Asia (via Russia) last couple of summer's and will know the deal in Russia.

Can't say I heard of this rule.

A quick look shows them to be Polish? I believe every other country in Europe has to have trailers registered seperately so their paperwork will all be in check. I will look some more when I get home and maybe send them some emails etc.

Yes, it was a couple travelling with them. They had a sankey from the uk, never registered it in France and got turned away at the border. Anne may expand on this if she is reading. They ditched their offroad caravan also not due to paperwork though I dont think, it was before this I believe.

The search continues. Will ring a friend in the DVLA tomorrow and see if I can get mine registered somehow.

The Europe reg' thing may be it then.

Paul Gowan at RAC Touring Information in Bristol may know and be able to provide some legit-looking document other than a carnet. He uses the HUBB.

Hi G,
You don't need to temp import vehicle to Russia 'per say' and no carnet required. Border customs will arrange everything required on arrival in terms of vehicle needs to enter as long as you have visa, V5 and IDP docs. There is paperwork performed by the border officials to do with registering the vehicle but they look after all requirements on your behalf. You just need to arrange insurance. No expansion required to what you have already said re: trailer & caravan - you pretty much described in a nutshell the situation for both our parties concerned. Our caravan was already a 'goner' by the time we reached Russia so this left the trailer to deal with which never made it across the border due to lack of paperwork. I know your not travelling these countries but Turkey was a problem for us without caravan paperwork and Moldova was also a bit iffy, but we managed to sweet-talk both and got through. The rest of Europe we travelled was not a problem for us. If Paul from RAC can't help (esp. given no carnet involvement for Russia), I think trying a good Russian visa agency could be worth a shot to see if they can place something in your passport for both vehicle and trailer - else/or/and provide paperwork to smooth the way. Not sure what else to suggest other than forgery (I didn't say that and deny all knowledge) or producing any insurance paperwork (if any) by way of proof of ownership. On another note, for us, a separate carnet for either caravan or trailer was advised for any carnet bearing countries. Therefore you will need two - one for trailer and one for car. Will be interesting to see how you get on and if anyone else has experienced similar. Good luck!

The only thing I can add is that there used to be an overlanding company that towed a trailer behind the truck. I know for certain they had two Carnets but were rarely asked for the trailer Carnet. But when they were asked they just produced it and all went well.

don't assume that all border posts are the same. where I crossed I was left to sort out the paperwork my self, the customs guys couldn't be arsed!!
