Switzerland
 

Hi

We're off to Switzerland the 2nd week in March and would like to get some route/site recommendations. Will be staying in the South near France so any waypoints, road names, route numbers etc would be much appreciated.

Not limited to the South so could go anywhere but would prefer to spend the time in the Alps.

we went to swizerland two summers ago in the land rover - all on road, no off road. We spent two weeks moving every two days or so. I would heartily recommend the interlaken area, particularily lauterbrunnen (there is a very good campsite called camping jungfrau if I remeber rightly). Stunning scenery and exactly as you would expect Switzerland to be. The railway to the top of jungfraujoch is pricey but worth the views.

Also really liked a place called Lukerbad, which had natural hot springs and was a little off the beaten track. The campsite was OK. Brig and sion are also worth a visit. Places to avoid are definitely Geneva (and definitley the campsite). I found it to be particualrily souless, and considering its age the old quarter was only mildly interesting. Things to do seemed to revolved around art museums (which don't flost my boat).

If you want I can write down the full itinery we did, but It will take me a day or so to dig out the bumff I have on it.

On other bits of advice, try to take as much food as you can with you as the food proces are high. I would also strongly advise you to budget on doing your own cooking again due to the prices. Also don't forget that you have to buy a pass to use the motorways.

Thanks for the info, yes please, an itinery and some pics would be really helpful.

I'm with you regarding Geneva, neither me nor wife found it interesting at all, some nice buildings but like you say, generally souless and expensive. We also thought Sion was a nice place although we went through on an organised tour it would be nice to go back and do things at own pace.

We only have 11 days in Switzerland but I think its enough time to do a little exploring, do you know of any off road tracks? nothing too extreme.

Off Road in Switzerland
 

I live in switzerland.
There are not many off road tracks in switzerland, i know there are some in the Jura area close to the french border, don't know where exactly though. As for the alps you'll be hard pushed to find much. The interlaken area is great, Zermatt is beautiful, and the italian part is nice, also Luzern is worth a visit and perhaps Zurich, but I would skip the cities and do Interlaken and Zermatt. the motorway thing will cost you 40 CHF for the whole year, buy it at a petrol station.
Switzerland is tiny, I regularly go from Zurich to Lausanne for dinner, a friend of mine owns a restaurant in Lausanne and I live in Zurich. It's a 2 1/2 hour drive in a car and about 3 hours in a big massive 130 Defender.

Perhaps going over to the eastern area Graubunden would be good too if you like the mountains, the National park is over there, it's called "the national park".

In March there will still be a fair bit of snow higher up in the mountains.

Thanks for the info TA, will visit all the places you have named, I think I have been to Lausanne, but was on a tour so would like to go back again.
