Someone nicked my 4x4. AARRGGHHHH
 

Ok so your having a great time and leave your 4x4 so you can go treking for a week. The hotel you leave it at says it will be ok no problem and low and behold you return to find it gone .....its your worst night mare.

Ok so im a little paranoid never did Ozzy any harm.

Question is how do you prove it was nicked so as to forfil your Carnet responsibilities ??? its probly been asked before but i want to leave a cash lump sum instead of paying the insurance.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune Hobnob, you must be pretty pissed.

Which country are you in at the moment and is it not possible to get a case number from the local police?
I would also suggest calling the company who issued you the carnet and reporting the theft to them straight away. They will at least be able to advise you as to what they need from you to prove the theft.

I think from reading your post that this is a theoretical question and you haven't actually had your 4x4 nicked - is this correct? However Geoff's advice is valid - you need to go and get a police report showing that the vehicle has been stolen. You then submit this back to who ever supplied the carnet although keep a copy (in case they manage to lose it) and this should surfice. However its likely to a protracted period to get it resolved. Would also suggest that if its a local police force that writes the report, possibly try and get it stampted at the police headquarters in the capital to give it more credability.

Take a picture or 3 of the vehicle clearly showing it's surroundings before you leave, ideally with some staff in the pic. And/or buy a local newspaper and photograph that in the pic as well....

Of course going hiking means taking a backpack; are you going to risk destroying your carnet in the rain, sweat, heat and general crushing that the contents of a backpack have to survive??
If the truck's gone the carnet may have gone with it...

You're in more danger of coming back and finding it empty. Polaroids are good, they accuse the person you left responsible, when you come back and find the truck untouched, you can give the pic to the guard, he'll be happy.

A hidden switch on some solenoid wires or other knobbling device would stop it wandering.
