shipping UK to US

Can anyone give me some information about shipping a car from the UK to the US for a 3 or 4 month road trip? Do cars need to be modified in any way to meet US regulations or are UK spec vehicles ok on a temporary import basis? Has anyone used a shipping company they can recommend? Are carnets required?

I've looked at buying a car out there but it seems even clunkers are way more expensive than in the UK so shipping a car could work out to be not too much more than buying out there. Plus I like my car!

Thanks,

I've not done it. but I did enough research to know I didn't want to try.

What many people have done is shipped to halifax in Canada where it is much easier to do a temporary import without the vehicle being overly analyzed to see what rules it may or may not comply with.

then drive over a land border into the USA with no big hastle. it is only the sea ports that apply every letter of the law. twice.

You might make contact with Mark Prior fromalaskatobrazil who has done this with a UK truck.

Thanks for the reply.

Canada would be no problem as I want to go there too. Will look into it further.
