Shipping 2 Toyota 4x4 Turkey to Sudan
 

My son and I are planning a trip London - Turkey - South Africa.
We want to ship our Vehicles and ourselves from Turkey (Preferably from port Iskenderun) to Port Sudan on the Red Sea.

Please advise on possible shipping agents I can use and any other info that may be of use.

1-Dimensions,weights of each one..Whatelse will be included inside the container if will be included or only vehicle.Vehicle and owner nationality and an address in destination country.(address,telephone,email)
2-Date.
And attention pls, to Africa ports,best are İstanbul and Mersin ports for direct shipping..(port capacity,civil customs,suitable container,etc.)

International passenger flights to abroad except Europe are available only from İstanbul Atatürk Airport.

I know two couples who tried to arrange transport for their vehicles in the other direction ie Port Sudan north but it was incredibly expensive (I will try and dig out their email with the actual figures). Shipping through the Suez canal comes at a high premium I guess. I hope you are luckier in the other direction - sometimes it works that way.

I very much doubt you can travel with the vehicles though. These will be container vessels. You'll have to fly to meet them.

No passengers allowed for sudan destination...(Only Egypt destination)

1-you can fly there from istanbul with a connection flight..
2-you can take the ferry from Mersin or İskenderun to Port Sait for you together with the vehicles if you are ready to make a wrestling with egypian customs for several days..

IMPORTANT NOTE..:Things change so fast on this destination..Dec.3.2013 current information is, only vehicles taken by boat and passengers by plane to Damietta/Egypt..Ticket sale agency is remon travel..

We just completed the trip Sudan - Egypt (Port Said ) - Turkey in August. Prior to going through the frustrations of Egypt we investigated shipping from Port Sudan to Turkey and its was very expensive (around USD$3,000) plus you cannot travel on the ship with your vehicle as it will be a container ship. You have to fly separately Mersin- Istanbul- Cairo- Khartoum - Port Sudan and that will cost you another $600pp or so.

So we ended up going through Wadi Halfa - Egypt - Port Said and the Russian ferry to Mersin and survived the beauracracy... Egypt is not so bad as the say all the time -and the Western Desert/White Desert is great! Might be the cheaper option?

Can't comment on Sudan but have just finished clearing my vehicle through customs in Alexandria because I didn't see that there was a ferry operating from Mersin in Turkey to Port Said, sometimes its the lessons in life that cost you money that you learn the most from. OK so about the RORO I have spoken to some other overlanders who took the ferry and they told me it was quite difficult to locate the actually ferry in Mersin due to the English Turkish language barrier but they eventually got there, that journey cost them about $500 for their vehicle and a cabin for 2 people and sailign of 4 days the clearing in Port Said took about 3 days and further cost of about a further $350.

I can however comment on the experience I have had from Athens to Alexandria.
I used a company in Athens called Primeway (George Lianos) they were very helpful and the process was very simple. The cost for the container 1 x 20ft including, transport to the port, lashing of the vehicle, loading of the vehicle and clearing of the vehicle was €1200 probably work out cheaper for you per vehicle as you could use a 40ft to ship both vehicles.

Then in Alex I needed to pay the shippers Tarros shipping (Francesco Ornaghi) a further $285 for unloading of the vehicle within the port.

Clearing, well that is something else, the closest word in the english language would be bureacracy but this was more than that. I paid $500 without receipts which was $200 for the clearers and a further $300 for clearing but no idea what this $300 was for other than my temporary number plates and other clearing matters. I can difeinately say that the clearers I used were exceptionally helpful and made what would have been an almost impossible task possible with all their people being very helpful even when the language barrier presented itself the company is called Egptian Global Logistics

I also ended up paying EGP 500 ($87) for the Automobile Association to verify my Carnet which they gave me a receipt for, still don't know why but if you don't pay they don't clear.

A further EGP 540 ($95) for a fire extinguisher (6KG) they wanted me initially to buy 2 even though I had 2, 1kg in my Landy, they settled for me only buying 1 on top of the fact that no other car seems to have an extinguisher and something I believe is a none issue when you arrive on a RORO but again if you don't buy one they won't clear your vehilce.

Finally a further EGP520 ($92) for insurance valid for 3 months even though I have insurance with sufficienct cover and clearly marked on the form that cover is provided for "All Countires in Africa".

This whole process took 5 days as a Friday fell in between this all and added to the fact that the vessel arrived over their Eid celebration, the process was also 5 days because in the Muslim world a Friday is like a Sunday in the western world, so no one works.

Flights for two from Athens to Cairo and then to Alexandria cost €400 for the two of us.

I hope this info helps you, my advice would be to take the RORO from
Turkey, the clearers I used Egyptian Global Logistics told me they operate this service so hopefully they might be able to provide you with some information about it.

I'm shocked by some of these prices. We looked into all of these options last year and couldn't even gain traction on prices....but this was before the Mersin-Alexandria ferries were even running.

We opted for Italy - Tunisia and driving across Libya. This is something I would HIGHLY recommend for any future overlanders. The ferry is not very expensive - all prices are available and tickets and be purchased on Grimaldi Lines' website. Crossing Libya was easy with good roads and GREAT sites. The Egyptian border, while annoying wasn't a rip-off. We navigated it on our own, got receipts for everything and didn't get hassled about fire extinguisers.

when was it that you crossed Lybia? What about safety issues, did you have any problems at all, either in Lybia and/or Egypt?
