carinitaaustria,

We drove across Libya at the end of July/beginning of August of 2012. There were NO safety issues for us in either Egypt or Libya. I'll try to run down some of the stuff that we ecountered..

The Libyan/Tunisian border was "closed," but we were able to convince the Tunisians to let us cross because we had valid Libyan visas for that border. On the Libyan side there were rebel guards, but no customs officials, no insurance folks, no one to deal with carnets. That turned out to be a non-issue as there wasn't really a central goverment at the time.

Getting out of Libya was a breeze...and while there were a LOT of rebel checkpoints, they were all extremely nice and would offer us food and water. They were all very glad that we were there visiting and were proud of their country and the revolution.

The Egyptian border was a bit of a mess, but we did it without fixers and for two vehicles, we paid a total of about $200-250 USD for insurance, licenses, license plates, carnet stamping, etc. I'll have to check my numbers, but I think that's about right. We did get receipts for everything as well. The process took about 4 hours.

The problems that we had in Egypt had to do with obtaining Sudanese visas. We were a group of 7 of 5 of us were Americans. It took about 5 weeks to get the visas, but once we got them it was easy getting into Sudan.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
