You don't need additional insurance in south Africa. Just get in your car and drive:scooter:...not sure about namibia, and from memory, we didn't have any for botswana either.

Hi dan
Just been on the phone for the last few hours trying to sort out how to get car insurance sorted for south africa rang a nice chap working for cambell irvine and they said that with the exesses it would be 1200 pounds
and that for what my car is worth, it's not worth paying which is rare for an insurance firm.
He said that we should be able to get it at the docks and gave me a number of a Z.A insurance company that he said would help me out so once i have spoken to them i'll post it.
It seems to me that if you arn't that bothed then the basic insurance that comes at the boader is good anuff.

As Pumbaa has said, 3rd party insurance isn't needed for SA. Also not needed for Namibia. We had to buy on the border when we crossed into Botswana though. It's worth getting the COMESA yellow card insurance if you're visiting a few countries as it works out cheaper than paying every time on the border. Have a search around here for info on that. I bought it in Bulawayo from Jupiter Insurance. Price depends on how long / how many countries you want it for.

At least for South Africa the 3rd party insurance for government property is officially included in teh fuel price. Dunno about NAM. I traveled around SA, NAM, BOT and LES with a german rego and had no local insurance whatsoever, because my german insurance agent told me that my european insurance covers 3rd party damages in foreign countries as well. Not sure whether that would have happened in the "worst case" :(

But what you should consider is an insurance for your own vehicle, as most drivers in Africa are under insured...

Forgot to mention before.

We are in South Africa with an Oz registered Landcruiser. FYI - I am South African and have a SA driver's licence. I called a company called Outsurance regarding 3rd party, fire and theft insurance for SA. They said it is possible and will cost around R150 per month. All I need to do is take it to an inspection centre in my area for a visual inspection (not sure why though...). I would imagine that you might need a permanent address in SA to be able to take out this policy, and I'm not sure how foreign licence would affect this?!?!?

O.k so i've been looking in to the insurance situation foe south africa a little more and joined a south african 4x4 forum really helpful guys and this is what they had to say on the matter.

Gary

Insurance and also third party insurance isnt compulsory in SA. So you can basically drive around with no insurance. A part of the fuel price goes to the Road accident fund, which pays out to injured people (only after a lengthy legal process). This do not cover the damage on vehicles or the other person's vehicle.

Why dont you call Tuffstuff insurance and find out whether they are prepared to cover you? They are specialised 4x4 insurance. That is if your local insurance do not cover you.

Hope this help.

I'm going to give tuff stuff a call on monday and if i have no luck getting extra insurance so be it if i'm legal that'll do.
