Question Selling a car in Asia... advice, tips needed!

Hello!

We are planning an overland trip from Switzerland to India. We want to sell the car there and not drive/send it back. Does anyone have any experience in selling a car in China, Nepal, India? With The Carnet de Passages en Douane requirement in India we probably cannot sell it there... Right?

Any ideas about customs, taxes etc. that need to be payed from the deal? Would it be best to sell to a tourist looking for a way to move on, or a local car dealer?

Any feedback is welcome! Thanks in advance!

Annika

You can probably sell it to a fellow countrymen, if you can process the papers in your country. The carnet shouldn't be the problem. Contact your local carnet supplier for info how to handle that part. Now if you want to sell it in India and the car has to stay there, it has to be imported, and likely be a very costly adventure and not worth the buyers money, unless you have a very interesting vehicle.
I don't know about the other countries. Anyway, you would want your carnet covered. So either a customs stamp, or a stamp from the police, or the embassy. If not you might loose your deposit...

... and you can't drive into China in the first place. I think trying to sell a car in a carnet country will be next to impossible. I might be wrong, people do all sorts of things...

Thanks for the info guys! One can drive into China, you just need a few thousand dollars to do that. So far I've found people who have sold a car in Kyrgyzstan, so we are going to try that and fly on from there.

you need to check with your carnet issuer. I think you may run into problems if you don't come back with the vehicle, even if you sell it in a non carnet country
