One Person travelling around Africa with 4WD + Motorcycle?

Hi,

Ive had a look around and cant find a thread about what i am thinking...maybe someone can help.

I was thinking of making a change to a 4WD to go from the top to the bottom of Africa and back, but i couldnt go without a moto, so I was thinking of strapping a small scrambler on the back ... a 125 or a 250cc.

Does anyone have any experience with this, with regard to one person importing two vehicles into each country?

(I know i am being greedy...but ) Am I mad to think about this?

Thanks
Stephen

Hi Stephen,

not exactly personal experience but when we crossed into Egypt from Sudan in 2011 some people we shared the barge with had problems.

They were a Swiss couple travelling in a big 4wd truck with a motorbike in the back. The truck and the bike were on separate carnet's but both in one person's name. The Egyptians wouldn't allow one person to import two vehicles. They got through eventually but after plenty of negotiations involving their carnet issuer, the Egyptian AA and customs. It wasn't cheap either.

This couple had travelled from Europe down the west coast and back up the east coast of Africa and hadn't had any problems until Egypt.

Good luck with it, when we travelled through Africa there were quite a few people in big 4wd trucks with bikes in the back so there must be a solution.

Typical Egypt, if there will be a problem it will be there ;-)

I think if you have the right paperwork and clearly look and behave like a tourist traveller then you should be ok, but maybe after some polite discussions… (except for Egypt and probably Angola)

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
