MOVED: Are 4x4 posts relevant to this site?

Just wondering...

palace15 29 Aug 2010 17:31

In answer, yes, although the majority of us are on 2 wheels, 4x4s have similar problems with border crossings, and I believe can contribute very much to the site. One day some of us 2 wheelers may go 4x4 and apart from that they will be seeing and sharing photographs from the same locations.

Yes to the poor devils on four wheels...

I've come across them in some obscure parts of the world and many of them have been very grateful to Horizons because of the great info it has.:D:D

"better than all the 4X4 websites" I was told by one driver.

so lets share the info and not restrict it (after all, they need all the help they can get)

Starbeck 30 Aug 2010 12:55

Why not?
Ewan and Chas never set off without at least one.

They're the "must have" GS accessory :thumbup1:

I just don't see it..

I must have been thrown by,

Just wondering...what's it to you?

Mangochi Taxi 7 Sep 2010 00:25

Ah Yes...

Thanks Tiffany, you did make me laugh and Starbeck, yes I forgot about Ewan and Charlie.

I think I see it now...

In my experience its the 4X4 guys helping out the motorcyclists, not the other way round. I love 'em. I don't like what they do to single track trails .... but when someone's life is in the balance ... might be worth it. Often times sharing route knowledge is handy too. Or if you've run out of light and need to share a camp site. The Jeep guys have everything!

The best thing of course is most carry ICE COLD beer on board are are pretty generous with it! jeiger Sure, in places it takes them forever to get anywhere, but other times they float through without a care ... like in meter deep Sugar Sand in the heat of the day!

4X4 Guys are your best friend! beerchug

Adds extra shite to wade through when what some people want is a motorcycle site, not an all roads vehicle site, I suspect. Don't particularly mind it personally as long as people make it clear in their thread headings (which most usually do) that they are talking about 4x4's so I can skip 'em.

garmei 7 Sep 2010 12:52

Don't 4x4s have their own forum area in the HUBB? All tech posts specific to 4x4s go in there and the other regional travel posts are sometimes quite useful (or as useful as posts by motorcycle travellers generally are).

As long as people post in the right forum, I can't see there being an issue with sh** to wade through. Just use the right area of the forum like you did with this thread. Oh ,hang on... sub sahara....4x4s ....? :innocent:

Personally I think the HUBB left behind any vehicle bias long ago, regardless of titles.

Some bits are two wheel specific, some for those with more. Most just covers "travellers", and that I think is good. beerbeer

In fact well under half of the forums are bike specific :)

DRad 9 Sep 2010 23:06

Based purely on my 9 months experience so far through Africa, I think 4X4's should be more than welcome!

How many riders have (or have heard of riders who have) had a 4X4 carry some of their gear through a really nasty patch? Or, like in my case, help drag my heavy-ass bike up out of a deep gravel ditch?

How many riders have enjoyed the comforts of home (cold beer) that bush camping with a 4X4 can provide?

How many riders have shared Embassy, camping, border crossing, etc info with 4X4ers?

As long as 4X4 posts are clearly marked as such, I think they can provide and get value to/from this site as much as anyone else...

A hell of a lot more relevant than this post is in the sub saharan section:rofl:

Okay, we all love the 4x4 guys..

We're all travellers and we all have our individual approach to the journeys we take..

I want an adventure, and to me that involves surprises along the way. What's the point knowing it all, having all the equipment and seeing photos of the places you're travelling to...
I don't have a gps or cell phone and I don't want anyone else to carry fuel/water for me.
I'm happy to get lost, I don't mind running out fuel in the middle of the bush, that's all part of it.

What I do want is to do it all on a motorbike.

When it comes to information I stick to what's relevant TO ME and that's from guys on two wheels.

I do like a cold beer though..
