is it possible?

I've just landed a job in india, starting january, but I fancy driving there! two questions

a. is there a viable overland route to India I could cross in December?
b. can it be done in 6 weeks?

I was thinking of the route through the stans and into pakistan, is this feasable? I appreciate on this time scale I am not going to do a lot of sightseeing, but that isn't the plan. I am no stranger to endurance driving having covered Kazan to England, 3000 miles in 3 1/2 days, and Gambia to England in 10 days, amongst numerous other ridiculous feats!
Any advice much appreciated as you'll appreciate I am very short on time.

cheers in advance

Easy in 6 weeks to actually drive there - good roads right through to the Iran/Pakistan border where it gets a bit less so - but getting a visa for Iran and Pakistan and then India in time might prove tricky.

Turkey/Iran/Pakistan is the 'normal' route though Iran is always hit and miss.

You should be fine. I did this trip over three months arriving in December in India. It could easily be done in 4 weeks. Eastern Turkey and Iran are quite high so it'll be cold and there may be snow though. And IIRC Baluchistan (the Pakistani state south of Afghanistan) has had some trouble recently - riots in Quetta??

Visas will be the main problem, but you have a couple of months...

nice one, cheers, visas start this week!!

Endurance riding? Why?

:oops2: What are the attractions of "endurance riding"?

You dont see anything so why not fly? Convince me that it's worthwhile. Sounds like a load of b*%$"+!"....

if it needs to be explained then you will never understand.

Bernard 27 Sep 2006 09:14

Try. I might not understand all of it but I am very interested.

moggy 1968 30 Sep 2006 00:55

number one, I have to be there by january to start the new job I'll do my sightseeing on the way back
number two the challenge and thats the bit that cannot be explained, it just is
number three just because you can't see the point doesn't mean someone else doesn't. just because it's not what you would want to do doesn't make it 'b%$*&^@¬'

crossing the stans in winter, can it be done?

Iit looks as though recently all UK visa applications for iran have been turned down. this leaves me with crossing the stans, including afghanistan.
question is simply is this possible in november in a 4x4?

Toby2 5 Oct 2006 11:21

How about Saudi then UAE / Oman etc across to Pakistan or India. Think stans would be fantastic but this might be an easier alternative.

moggy 1968 6 Oct 2006 00:58

the only thing that put me off that route is that I heard shipping into india is a nightmare.
