Importing to Australia?

I'm currently in India, heading to Sydney in a 2003 Nissan X-Trail. I would like to sell my car in Oz when I get there, but from what I can tell only Aussies can bring in their own vehicles on permanent import. I'm Canadian, the vehicle is British. Is there such a thing as a third-party importer or other way to sell the vehicle there? Or will I have to get it back to the UK somehow? I feel like there is always a way with such things.

I wish to stay in Oz for some time, live and work, etc, so having to deal with getting it back out would be a bit of a hassle.

it used to be that you could import if you pay the duty , but that is very high so not an economical proposition, as a resident there is discounting but if you have not owned for long its marginal then . Probably easiest/cost effective is put it as part load in a container back to uk .
You cannot import under the personal scheme as a non resident, there are commercial schemes but you would not be able to use this method , those with a licence might be able to buy your car but even if they were minded to it would be for peanuts . Even residents cannot buy your car as they have to have bought whilst overseas . HTSH

Do a weblookup on VSB10 which gives you all the details that you need about importing a vehicle.

To get the vehicle into Australia (as a non resident) you will need a carnet - thats the only way now to get a vehicle into Aus as a tourist. With all the conditions that the carnet bring with it.
