Hi all

going traveling for a couple of years in are iveco 4x4 down to asia
then maybe africa depending on finances time etc.
The question i have is being married an advantage . Me and my girlfriend havebeen together for 7 years marriage has never been an issue for us. We have both been wondering if it can make a difference on the road e.g emergency medical situations etc

None that I can think of unless one of you actually die.

Even then, and in all other situations where it might be useful, claim you are already married - she is my wife, he is my bloke etc as it's unlikely anybody will ask for a marriage certificate.

I know quite a few Chinese/Vietnamese people and getting married there and in the UK is more about having a wedding feast and from that point you are married - the legal rubbish we invented to go with it isn't such a big issue (maybe do that in the UK 6 months later when you get around to it etc).

So say you are married and you will be - that's how many of the locals will have done it :-)

Careful, once you are married you can't ride off and leave her in the desert if she's nagging you because she owns half of your bike

If you want to visit Saudi Arabia, you need to be married, or your girlfriend must be your sister but then you have other problems :)

My ex girl and I(in our 50s!!!) were like you and got married second time around after 4 yrs of unmarried bliss because our extensive overseas experience confirmed that it would be better in sticky situations.Now,for the last 10 yrs of working and living in ME,SE Asia and India we have always considered it the right decision as it has opened doors and made life easy.We will consider divorce and unweded bliss again once we retire and get back to living in Europe where 'the decadent life' is not considered as abnormal and heinous!Strongly suggest you do the same.

Do a pre-nup agreement, you tell her to have no claim on half your bike and she can keep ALL her make-up, shoes and handbags! :thumbup1:

That wouldn't always work , some of the male inhabitants in here [ naming no names ] [but thinking of AT riders ] might want to hang on to some of that girly stuff and wear it themselves .

Three months jail for sex on beach

The judge did not provide any details about his verdict as is customary in Dubai, so it is unclear whether Michelle Palmer and Vince Acors were found guilty of engaging in intercourse, or some lesser offense.

The two Britons, who are both in their 30s and met at an all-you-can-drink champagne brunch before the alleged incident occurred, were arrested in July and later charged with sex outside of marriage, public indecency and drunkenness.

In addition to the three month jail sentence, Judge Hamdi Mustafa Abu el-Khair levied a 1,000 dirham (US$272) fine against each of the defendants and ordered them to be deported from Dubai after serving their prison time.

"I will appeal (the verdict) and ask a judge to look at the medical report that says they did not have sex," their lawyer, Hassan Matter, told the Associated Press after Thursday's ruling.

Both previously admitted they were drunk but denied having sex. The two were not in the courtroom Thursday to hear the judge's verdict, and it was unclear if they would remain out of prison while their lawyer appealed the case. http://www.canoe.ca/CanoeGlobalnav/invisible.gif

Matter said he will submit his appeal after the judge issues a formal explanation of his verdict, which the lawyer expects in a week to 10 days. The defence has to file an appeal within 15 days.

"I think the judge gave a small punishment for a kiss, not sex on the beach," said Matter.

The couple could have received two years in prison if convicted of all charges. Public displays of affection are illegal in Dubai - a city that has worked hard to cultivate an image as a haven for Western tourists and businesses in the Middle East but has a conservative legal code based on Islamic laws and tribal rules.

Being married in Muslim countries makes getting hotel rooms easier as some require a marriage license. Now, who do you know who travels with their marriage license?? Wear rings and if you look the part, that should be good enough. As for medical issues, usually just being a foreigner will put you in front of the queue/line.

What I'm suggesting in a nutshell is, don't get married unless it's for a damn good reason. In my experience and what other women I know have discovered, is most men once married suddenly become couch potatoes and give up their adventuring life....

It is true that a spouse has some rights in an emergency situation that a non-spouse does not (e.g., the right to give consent to medical treatment, right to deal with banks/insurance companies/officialdom on the other's behalf, etc). In many countries that won't matter, but it can be an issue in some. If you're unclear whether you want to take the marriage step, though, then a notarized power of attorney giving your partner those rights should be enough ...

It’s easy to fabricate a marriage license, used to have a template in Word but it looks like it’s gone. Hmm, I told my gf to stay away from my computer. :nono:

To be honest..we're not. But on our journeys we're everytime for everyone married!
Diffrent names on the passports (no problem , they know that is normal in europe) very important is the same adress..
