Insurance for a foreign(Australian) registered car in Europe

We're driving from Sydney to Europe, currently in Pak and are seeking advice on 3rd party car insurance for approx 4mths when we reach Europe for an Australian registered vehicle. So far we've bought at the border in Thailand and Laos, it comes with the paperwork in China and needs to be arranged for Sing/Malaysia at the Singapore AA in person as a pre-requisite of collecting the car from the port. In Nepal, India and Pak we took the view it wouldnt be worth the paper it was written on and anyway any rickshaw wallah we hit or the owner of any goat we flattened wouldn't be interested in dealing with an insurance co and would be unlikely to let us move on until a bundle of rupes had changed hands. We're not sure it works the same in Eu.

So far the Aus insurers arent interested and those in the UK dont seem to understand the question. Suggestions welcome

I'm afraid I can't help you with the specific question but I've had some fairly unusual requests when it comes to insurance in the past and the two companies I've found most helpfull were CIS and adrian flux.

CIS - Co-operative Insurance
SPECIALIST CAR INSURANCE & CHEAP CAR INSURANCE UK FROM ADRIAN FLUX

it's also worth trying the broker Barry Grainger Ltd - Index
they are also used to dealing with unusual requests.

Try googling Stuart Collins Insurance, Swansea - they specialise in 'odd' things!

If the TR AA will insure you WITH a Green Card for a reasonable price than that's the way to go. I did this for a small sum back in '89 in Izmir. However, I have seen some expensive prices quoted for them recently.

Alternatively, Knopf Tours (link somewhere on this site) will provide you with a GC by mail, but it's not valid in TR and some Balkan countries, where you will have to buy it at the border.

Don't ride without a GC in the EU!

have a read through this website...

Australia

when these guys turned up at the border to the EU there were a whole lot of booths selling insurance. so no need to sort this beforehand - although you may save yourself a little bit.

the AA and RACQ in the UK both organise temporary insurance - but i think it would be cheaper to get it from other european countries or at the border.
