Europe to The Gambia in a van?

Hey folks,
just found this board and it's fantastic. hoping someone might be able to give me an idea how feasible it would be to travel form europe to the gambia in a regular 2wd vw transporter via morocco, mauritania and senegal and western sahara? is a 4wd really necessary? anyone done it?

I would reccomend the book travelvans if you are thinking of fitting the van out, on the website of the same name. The transit (if its the one that was with us) did ok, but blew a ring towards the end, although it struggled on to finish. was rather jealous of the sleeping arrangements, made us look a bit poverty spec!!
