Combi vs hilux vs Pebjero

here i go again,

I'm still a bit clueless about what i might find for 30,000 rand.
I don't want to waist to much time or money finding a vehicle for my 6 month trip to kenya. at 10 USD a night for a room i'll be looking at a good chunk of change that can be spent on actual traveling.

i've heard mixed reviews of the best place to buy a bakkie, J'burg or cape town. any tips?

How far will a Combi get me, i'm not a huge off roader i'm not scaliing mountains or sand dunes. how bad are the secondary roads that lead to smaller places? will a combi get by?

I've seen some smaller Hilux LWBs they look dinky but in my price range! any advice?

what would be the next step up?

i know everything varies, but every oppinion will help me narrow my search and save me time

Drivetrains on the new-pattern Hilux are much less robust than they used to be - I wouldnt look at one these days, esp wheelbearings. Ive heard too many horror stories and seen their results in the desert.

Pajero are adequate especially if you arent doing too much offroading. Their electronic suspension systems can be less than reliable and I find them claustrophobic.

Combis are great if you stick to the roads. Lovely reliable 2.4 or 2.9 diesel in more modern versions. Which type did you mean?
