Does anyone know of a good (and cheep!) place to buy worldwide vehicle insurance?

UK registered vehicles only
Stuart Collins and Co European Motor Insurance and Annual Green Cards

arranges insurance for UK registered vehicles (but not bikes) that are out of UK long term.
Not sure if it is World wide but certainly covers "EU and other countries".
I have no idea of price competitiveness.

There's no such creature in the world of vehicle insurance. Too many different local laws apply - even amongst States within the same country.

The Green Card Zone - do a weblookup - is about the biggest insurance zone - but you only get the legal minimum (varies from only third party injury upto third party property/injury) in those countries and often have to buy additional insurance cover to get fully comp. if available at all without selling your your first to fourth born children.

Worldwide car insurance
For anyone interested.....

There is a company in Holland that do world wide vehicle insurance, covering for fire and theft of your car. It only cost £500 for me for 12 months and that was covering a loss of £12000, pretty good I think.

They also did my green card insurance for Europe, Turkey, Iran and the UAE, this was extra, around £300.

Last poster - that's a good price, but I thought that company specialised in snazzy kitchenwear!

If that fails, try Campbell Irvine in London - if he is still in the same job, Mike Irvine is extremely helpful.

So do most of you go this route? or just get it in each country. I see some people dont get it at all.

Just looking for a general consensus as I really dont know what to do. Initially I was going to get it in each country just to please the authorities.

what are the chances of a European company paying out for something outside of the EU?

Well - EU green card insurance, which your UK insurance gives you by law, provides as a minimum 3rd party cover in all the member states - and maybe fully comp cover if you pay extra - depends on the co.

For damage to your OWN vehicle outside the green Card area, it will be one of those worldwide cos as mentioned in the thread, although you may also be able to buy it in individual countries. For 3rd party cover outside the green Card area, that is when you need to buy it for each individual country, although sometimes a co in 1 country will give 3rd party cover for neighbouring countries. My Malaysian insurance, for eg, gave 3rd party cover up to 50 kms inside Thailand. And when I bought my Indian cover in Amritsar, I could have opted for 3rd party cover in Nepal, Burma and (believe it or not) Pakistan!

Think of vehicle insurance as 2 types. One insurance covers your vehicle and the other type of insurance protects you against liability against you by a 3rd party for injury or damage.
Vehicle insurance against loss of your vehicle for international travel can be obtained through Campbell Irving in London. That is optional you can take the risk and not insure or insure your vehicle
3rd party or liability insurance is usually obtained through your own country insurance but it generally is restricted to certain international countries. Many countries require you purchase their liability insurance when entering that country. It is compulsory and not an option. In Africa depending on your route you can purchase 3rd party insurance that covers several countries, known as pink card, yellow card or brown card. In Mexico regardless of your American or Canadian insurance you are required to get their insurance if you plan to stay in the country over a certain time or travel a certain distance.
Hope this helps understand the messy issue of insurance which is one of the most difficult issues to understand as it depends on the country your vehicle is registered and the country you are planning to travel to.

In East and Southern Africa it is the Comessa Yellow Card scheme, covers:
BURUNDI, DJIBOUTI, D R CONGO, ERITREA, ETHIOPIA, KENYA, MALAWI, RWANDA, SUDAN, TANZANIA, UGANDA, ZAMBIA, ZIMBABWE.

Quote from Comessa website:
"The Scheme is envisaged to expand beyond the region. In this regard, COMESA and
SADC are working together to harmonise the Yellow Card Scheme with the fuel levy system
implemented in SACU countries, with a view to enabling motorists from South Africa, Botswana,
Swaziland, Namibia, Lesotho and Mozambique, to use the Yellow Card cover for their travel in the
COMESA Region."

I thought it covered vehicles in those countries, but................

The Yellow card is available from most Insurance brokers in the above countries, or as mentioned above you can get basic cover at most borders.
