Best way to get a ferry??
 

Hey... Have just been on Ferry websites to possibly book a cross channel ferry for August, and have been quoted £570 return!!!... har har... They must be having a bit of a chuckle.. I would rather swim and tuck the land rover down my trunks!
Seriously, what is the best cost effective way to get over to mother europe in the summer?
It has been suggested I get a cheapo awayday return via the chunnel, and dont bother turning up at the end of day to come back. Then I will be able to do the same from the franco side???? Is this possible without some kind of wrist slapping?

Any suggestions?

You can get cheaper by looking around - an hour on the internet should bring up something more reasonable.

If you turn up at Dover with a fully loaded car, particularly 4wd, and try and claim that you are 'day return' you are in for a problem.

We tried the same, and were told that we would be charged for a standard single if we were not back the same day. We had booked with a credit card so they could have just debitted a second amount. In the event they didn't - don't know why not as it was 'a fair cop'.

We did look in the terms and conditions, and there was no mention of having to use both parts of the ticket - but in any case it's not worth going to court over!

I'll keep looking around, just thought with offers in the portsmouth area running from frees to £40 for a day return with car, I thought that over £400 was a bit steep, especially when I can fly to Prague for £19 plus tax from southampton if booked far enough in advance.

Will keep looking and report back here if I find anything good.

Chris, I got stung with a fiarly hefty ferry crossing last summer - apparently its the height of the landy that bumps it up. I found aout later that the Norfolk lines ferries to Dunkirk are way cheaper - apparetnly they don't take height into account . . . .

Hey... How do you get a £75 fare in August? The cheapest they would do for me was £300 +!

If you use the Chunnel - book your ticket online. It doesn't matter if you turn up earlier, you get on the next train.

They screw you if you just turn up and pay (speaking from experience of two crossings).

I've just booked a single ticket on the chunnel for my fully loaded Range Rover with roof tent etc - car over 1.85m - cost for 02 August? £50. Bargain!

Hey, thats really good!
I popped onto a ferry booking website yesterday, and see that it is still £350 for a return in August... hmmm...

I have now booked with sea france, having given the chunnel option up as too expensive, except for day returns. Maybe I should have booked a single way?
