Vehicle Medical/First Aid Kit

With a vehicle you can take a bigger (and more useful?) medical/first aid kit than on a bike etc.

In the past I have bought kits from Nomad Travel, topped up with a few extra prescriptions and a bunch of herbal remedies that work well.

I was looking at buying a new kit now, but wondered if their was a more comprehensive kit available from somewhere? Any suggestions from you widely traveled people out there?

Obviously you can't cover every eventuality, but with plenty of space available it seems sensible to look at the options etc

Hi Darrin,

Sounds like there is nothing wrong with what you are currently doing. Just make sure everything is still sealed and in date. I think the approach for most people is the same as yours. Building up on a kit which also matches that of your abilities. That is what we have done to. I also carry a seperate kit which contains syringes/needles/canulars etc which are for "dirty" hospitals should we ever need them.

Slightly off topic from the OP but you may want to look at storing/holding your kit. There is a small section on using a peli case as a 1st aid kit (1550 model) in one of the Overland Journal issues here: https://www.overlandjournal.com/down...007_spring.pdf

Seems like a good idea given the integrity of a pelicase. Last thing you want in your 1st aid kit is the outside environment getting in!

Food for thought.

what medical kit to carry

Hello Roaming Yak,
I'm medically trained and therefore a tad paranoid about taking enough equipment.
Check out our list of equipment we carried on our first trip: www.nessiesadventures.com/preparation.html
scroll to the bottom of the page and you'll see, highlighted in red, the nominal equipment we actually used- not much!!
(Airways and neck collars are good but if you don't know how to use them- you can do more harm than good.)
Good luck with your next trip!
Rose and Dave

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
