We will be off july 2010 and going through to turkey etc...Taking our time
as the girl's wish to take in the fancy bit's of europe etc.

Be carefull with the carnet issue at moment with the RAC last time i looked it was a wopping 800% for egypt but it may drop buy the time you go also there is so much trouble travelling in egypt regarding registration and also
diesel tax in syria etc...so for us we have said no and will be entering port
sudan.

If you could join us for some weeks that would be great...What ever you do
stay safe on the road eightpot and have a great time...as we do this to live
our live's to the full....

Many Regard's

Dan & Lou...

:thumbup1:we should be ok on the carnet front - we're doing the trip in a 28 year old Range Rover ambulance, so carnet value is negligible. I'll have replaced and rebuilt pretty much every nut and bolt by the time we go , so won't have any of the probs associated with old rangies, fingers double crossed :rolleyes2:.
Our start date may slip depending on household administration and
whether we can get someone to rent our house, and look after the cat and
dogs etc ...

I've been studying arabic for a while so looking forward to spending some time in Syria/Jordan - Saudi would be peachy but looks like I'm going to have to go through Egypt - always wanted to have a look at the western desert though so if I can fit it in then all good . We like a bit of diving as well, so plenty to keep us busy on the way down. Would be good to hook up with folks on the way down and I think there is no harm as well in having some contact details at hand even if we aren't synchronised en route to alert to problems or help each other if something crops up.

You doing it in LR's or Toyotas?

alittle slow but will bump into people along the way.

About a year ago we were looking at buying a car in the UK, shipping it to South Africa and driving it back. On the Carnet front the AA of South Africa was happy to provide us with one for a UK reg car and cover Egypt for 200% deposit....

I am South African, but my wife is British and the AA said that the car had to be in her name.

So, why not email them and ask if they would provide you guys with more affordable carnets?

Carnet de Passage

Oh, and we are leaving South Africa around May, heading north along the eastern route, so perhaps we'll bump into you guys along the way. We intend to take at least 12 months to reach the UK

Safe travels

We live in South Africa, so our stuff is here and ready to leave. We're taking it really slow, so you may well catch up to us at some point.

I think it depends on personal circumstances - if you are single, live with parents and have a decent base car to begin with you could be off as soon as you've saved a few grand to keep you in fuel/beer.

We have our own house, three animals and have had to sort out our jobs as well, and need much more cash as we need to ensure the mortgage and bills are paid while we're not here.

I think most take about year to plan it.

Hello Traveller 1041,

Is there a route you guys have worked out yet?
I have a 'Shiny new'ish slitty Land Cruiser' so the carnet would be a killer through Egypt, if it is still 800%, like when I last looked.
Since then I have more inclination to go West Coast,

I am not particularly looking for serious 'off road' but more of a 'getting from UK to Cape Town' in one piece, and minimum damage, wear and tear.

I was looking to do it in 3 months duration.

Not sure I will pull the trailer.

We intend to leave july 15 ish and so far this can be done the route is
EUROPE-TURKEY-SYRIA-JORDAN-SAUDI...

Then ferry to sudan this will miss out 800% carnet egypt then off through
the dark continent...which is all easy apart from the ocassional thieft as the east coast seems to have more thiefts...ie kenya NIAROBBERY this has always been like this there.....the west coast is ok but watch the tuareg in mali-tomboctou and also angola and the drc are always making it hard to get transit visa..

UK VETTE...drop us a email as i would like to chat regarding travell together...

My wife and I are easy on ROUTE i have spent my time and life west coast and central so i now this area....but still not to sure on definate route...
PLEASE CONTACT US IF ANYONE IS THINKING OF DRIVING TO CAPETOWN 2010-JULY TIME...WE ARE NOT TIME WASTER'S AT ALL
AND EASY ON WEST OR EAST COAST....REGARDS TO ALL

Hi

I sent a pm and a e-mail

The routes all seem to be getting easier on the vehicles, and possibly easier on the visas, but like any thing, it could very well be 2 steps forward, and 1 step back

Did you get my mail ?

straggler 6 Dec 2009 12:43

I live in Uganda and am thinking of buying a car in the UK and driving it back over here. I'd prefer to go via Saudi. when are you thinking of leaving? Any idea how much the ferry is? Are Saudi transit visas easy to get hold of?
