4X4 Dual Ownership?

I am looking to buy a used LandRover or LandCruiser in South Africa early 2014. Would appreciate a reply to any or all the following questions:

1) As a Canadian citizen is it possible to have a dual ownership registration with a friend who is a South African citizen?

2) Can I register a vehicle as a foreigner using my friends address?

3) Can I arrange for insurance locally?

Thanks in advance!

Why would you want to do that? If he already owns a car you can drive it a in his name without problems. If you wanna cross borders, you just need a paper issued by him stating that this is his car and that you are allowed to take it out of the country. All the rental car companies use the same system.

2) Can I register a vehicle as a foreigner using my friends address?

Yes, check this thread: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...oid-need-69788
and
Can a non-South African resident buy and register a motorcycle in their name?

3) Can I arrange for insurance locally?

Same threads as mentioned above.

Thanks in advance!

If you're travelling through Africa, that means you'll probably have a Carnet. And if you have a Carnet with a name that doesn't match that on the registration doco, you might have problems at borders. I'm not saying you will, but something to be aware of.

Exfoleyation: Egypt

The experience of these guys is about names on passports not matching names on the rest of the paperwork - they were delivering a vehicle to South Africa for someone who had bought it, thus the carnet was in his name and not theirs. They had to traipse all the way to Cairo to get the carnet overtyped with their names before the Egyptians would let them in.

But one can just imagine a bloody-minded customs official somewhere obscure making an issue out of something like this - if only as an excuse to extract un petit cadeau!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
