"Outback" Long Range Fuel Tanks

Hi Guys,
I'm currently looking at increasing my fuel capacity in my 110 - on a recent trip to Libya I used 200l in one and arrived at the petrol station with not a lot left...

I've got the standard LR dual tank setup plus 4x 20l Jerries.

I'm looking at probably adding a 40-50l tank under the wheelarch, or somewhere else underbody. I'm looking at the Aussie Long Ranger tanks and I've also a contact number for W&H in the UK. Chris mentions "Outback of Germany" on p121 of Sahara Overland, but I've not found any contact details from them. Has anyone out there used their products and has the contact info?

PS - Of course, the wonderful thing about buying a new tank is that fact that it pays for itself in a single trip to Libya, given the cheap fuel prices there!

It’s a great tank. An old friend of mine fitter a land cruiser tank to his Blazer and it worked beautifully.

ARB sells these tanks (http://www.arb.com.au/Long%20Ranger_...ater_Tanks.htm). So check with your local ARB dealer.

Not realy an answer more like more questions.
I also am looking to increase my capacity I have a 110 CSW and currently have one wing tank in line with the existing filler neck. This gives another 45lt. I bought mine from Mantec in the UK but when it leaked due to poor manufacture they wern't very helpfull at changing it- ended up costing me more than the tank! Other people do make the same location tank.
Has anyone got any experience with W+H? They make a tank which fits under the drivers seat without removing the seat box. Any other manufactures in adition to those listed would also be a help.

I ordered a wheel arch tank from Mantec for my TD5 110, but sent it back when I discovered that you have to glue the connection to the main tank. I talked to W&H Tanks and their tank bolts on – but I then sold the 110 and didn’t ever see it.

Getting hold of W&H Tanks isn’t easy. You have to leave a message on their answer phone and wait up to two days for them to phone you back.

I believe that the tank sold by Brownchurch is the W&H Tanks tank.

There is another Australian tank manufacturer with a very big range - Long Range Automotive (http://www.longrangeautomotive.com.au/) whose European agent is Outback Imports in France (tel: +33-44-229-2616).

The Long Ranger tanks are manufactured by Out of Town 4WD. For a design diagram go here: http://www.4wdworld.com.au/products/longranger/.

Stefano Pirola makes stainless steel tanks. You could email him for prices, but stainless steel isn’t cheap. His web site is http://www.granderg.com/.

Thanks for all the help and advice guys.

I'm going to do one of two things. 1) Replace both the existing tanks with the "Long Ranger" 132l primary and 80l aux or 2) Add two 45l ish tanks in the rear wheelarchs and use a pump (mechanised, but manually controlled) to move fuel to the existing tanks. I'm waiting to get the prices for the Long Ranger tanks before I decide... The only downside in using the 132l rear tanks is that I loose my 4mm alloy tank guard - the way I drive I'll have to get something fabricated....

PS Hi Roman - I've been following your engine related posts, hope you get sorted soon. I'm replacing the Spax HD shocks with dual OMEs all round. I looked at Foxx and Ohlins and decided that I'd rather have the Land Rover worth more than the shocks and not the other way around!!!

Although in Libya I had an auxiliary 110L tank behind the front seats, it was a stopgap solution as it wasn't plumbed anywhere. I had also looked at an option whereby fuel is pumped from the 2-nd tank into the main tank. But this is going to work only as long as the main tank is OK.I think if one goes to the trouble of fitting a second tank, it pays to go one step further and fit a separate level gauge and three way solenoids in the fuel lines so that both tanks are separated. If you lose one, you flip the switch and keep going. The solenoids can be obtained at ca UKP 28 and standard LR gauge can be recalibrated (if the shape of the tank allows for it). This is what I am going to do before my next trip.

I have a 110 hard top (ie loads of space inside the wings before the wheel arches). I designed a 45L tank for each side, then got a specialised metal worker to make the tanks and fittings up for me. He usually makes fuel tanks for aircraft - so they are way over legal requirements. BUT because he's not associated with the whole Land Rover market, he is not nearly as expensive!

The whole system works perfectly, all gravity fed, and gives me 170+L, all nice, secure and low down (without being at risk from ground impact).

Not cheap - get them made or buy a lorry tank. After contacting LRA I got good quotes from WH in the UK for sill tanks but have since changed my plans

What fuel switchover valves have you found - a friend of mine has just built me a 160 litre tank for the 101 to go with the stock 109 litre on the otherside but the only valves I have found are about 65+tax (but that does switch the feed and the return)

I'm a great fan of keeping things separate so if I hole one tank I can run on the other

Woick in Germany have a send and return duel switching level tap ll103296 (was £65). So I presume this can also be found in automotive type suppliers. They also have the single solenoide switches for about £30

Do the single solenoide type switches prevent air locks in a deisel system like the duel change over tap?
