Water tanks level

I'm new here I was just wondering if anybody could help me with a bit advice , I'm currently building a overland truck I've got my water tank ( aquaflow tank ) I've got a pump (SHURFLO) my tank is getting mounted under a false floor I was just wondering what people's suggestions are to check the level as the tank is not going to be easy to get to to check the level?

The simplest way is to mount a length of clear pipe from the underside or low on the side of the tank out to somewhere accessable for inspection or to the exterior of the vehicle, (just like an oil or diesel tank) have it mounted vertically to well above the tank height, preferably where it wont get caked in crap from the tyres or damaged by flying rocks, fit a petcock in line and block off the end with a length of fairly dense, but open cell foam to allow air to escape and enter thus showing the corect water level.

I used a spare piece of foam from inside a Pelican luggage case with some motorcycle filter skinz material (like pantyhose but tougher) over the top to keep crap out.

If mounted outside, tuck the top of this hose up into a shroud/clamp underneath the vehicle to keep crap off the top and away from inquisitive kids.
Fill the tank in increments with a container of known volume and mark on/by the hose the amounts until full (10/20/30/40/50/etc)
Just open petcock to check the level of the water tank at any time.

You do not need to have the petcock inline, but if the vehicle rolls onto its side (hopefully not!), depending on where the level guage is mounted you can watch all your water run out of the level tube or the vent......you will probably be somewhere you really need it......

Be aware that you want the top of the hose mounted somewhere well above the maximun wading depth of the vehicle or water could potentially enter the top of the guage hose and contaminate your tank.

Or you can buy a fancy electronic water tank guage for an RV/trailer and fit it into the top of the tank, just like a fuel tank guage....

I am also building an Overland Truck and I have two ( 250 lt ) tanks to be fitted under a seat.

I have opted for the Votronic Tank Level meter that can be adjusted to any size tank

how big a truck you building bigger than a 110 I take it as the system you are talking about is overcomplicated etc otherwise . JMHO

It is based on an 110dc ifor Williams back that I'm currently turning in to a a removable box to mount my roof tent on top of and lift the whole thing of in one go as my 110 is my day to day drive, how could I simplify it ? with out back trial fit of the back before fabrication starts

Are you going to build a floor onto the IW Cap and mount the tank on the floor ?

I had a custom made tank built for the 90 that fits between the wheelboxes, right up behind the bulhead, keeping the weight central and low. it ended up holding about 75 litres and i still had enough room for a box of spare parts, 5 litre oil can and tools behind it.

Yep I've made a false floor and then bolted to the underside of the false floor is going to be a mobile storage system draw and then also mounted to the underside is going to be my water tank
False floor and shelf been installed

I bought my level meters directly from Votronic in Germany earlier this year, when I was out there.

I also bought a battery monitoring computer, A large Sine wave inverter and a 24v to 12v converter.

I am still in the building stages so I haven't tried these items but I have seen many happy votronic customers at German overland truck meetings.

I think Roadpro in the UK are a stockist

Having a fixed water tank and electric pumping system in a vehicle that size , is using too much weight capability , and overcomplicates as your water usage with a shurflo pump will be too big for the capacity . Better from point of view of refilling , security of supply (eg all your eggs not in one basket) , and giving you a reinforcement of how little water you have to play with would be several seperate jerry cans . Before you start building your vehicle start by looking at total weight capacity (payload), and deduct things like weight of fuel, passengers, tools spares , tents , winch etc etc . It will surprise you how limited you will be . I found that a 110/130 size vehicle when used for long distance overland is for 2/3 people at max. JMHO
