Wanted, info on Leyland DAF 45 4x4

I am thinking of purchasing a Leyland DAF 45 4x4, ex-MOD, from a private buyer to kit out as a overland motorhome/camper. This one is winch fitted, with a comms cabin, and has low mileage.

The guy seams genuine and helpful with any advice, I'd just like some independent info if anyone has any on these trucks.

WHAT BREAKS, WHAT DOESN'T BREAK, WHAT NEEDS CHECKING.

I have heard good things about the cummings engine but not a lot else.

Any info or help greatly apprciated.

Josh

Hi Josh, If you haven't already it might be worth asking the REME lot:

http://www.arrse.co.uk/cpgn2/Forums/viewforum/f=29.html

Plenty of Daf 45 experience on that forum I'd imagine.

David Lambeth has run one for a few years for North Africa rally support - its a Ley Daf something.
Check his website: http://www.davidlambeth.co.uk

No probs as far as I know apart from being slow (like all these ex-mil 4x4 trucks.)

The 45 series is as simple as they come in stock form. Simple to work on. Easy to fix. Bulletproof Cummins engines come in various BHP ratings. 130 150 180.

Check for cab rot around floors and door apertures on older trucks.
Seized accelerators linkages and handbrake cables are very common faults whatever the age. Check the heater motors works. If it doesn't, it's a dash out job!

4x4 45 is a very rare 'special order' beast. Didn't know the military used them but having said that, who knows what they've got tucked away? Sure it's not a 55? More common version with greater payload.

Local fuel/oil company near me bought a 4x4 45 to replace the ageing Unimog they used for delivering to farms/houses out in the sticks. Had no end of bother with it, but what exactly went wrong I couldn't say. Just heard the story on the grapevine. They no longer have it.

Leyland Daf 4x4...I've got 2 of them!

Hi.
If you need to know about one of these & where to get your parts from, give me a ring on 01205 871945.

It's basically a great big Landrover Defender on parabolic leaf springs & air brakes.

I'm planning to have a page about them on my website davidlambeth.co.uk at some point in the future....don't hold your breath ,though.

David Lambeth.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
