New to the forum and enjoying the information enclosed. Looking to buy a vehicle, like many before me and wanted a little advice. Going next year via Spain to Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and home via Italy. Last drove a Landrover in '95 in Bosnia and a Landcruiser many years before - used to live in Kenya... as I'm not able to keep morre than 1 car, i need something that is civilised enough to use in London as everyday transport. Also remember that LRs are cramped for tall people, legroom. Would prefer Landcruiser... any thoughts appreciated.

"Civilised", I assume, refers to the the condition of bodywork and level of trim. All unmodified 4x4 are "civlilsed" (in contrast to DIY hybrid cars for weekend offroading). What you do with a civilised car to suit your overlanding needs is another matter. Although there are a few dozen makes and models to chose from and experimenting is always fun, people who stick to the tried and tested solutions go for Landrover 110, Rangerover Classic, Landcruiser 60 /75 /80, Nissan Patrol GR and not much besides. Other makes/models may be just as good but they don't offer robustness and load capacity/space or both. The final consideration is availability of spares in the places you travel through. I know you have a lot of experience so would welcome the chance to talk 'off-air' maybe. I will gor for a TLC but so far searches seem to throw up more series 90 than 80 for obvious reasons. probably... 3 people i know in Scotland have all had nightmares with theirs, relatively new vehicles. But for n africa, its probably more about preparation tyhan type of vehicle. We hired a Peugeot 205 locally in Morocco last year and spent very little time on road and perhaps luckily, had no problems, not even a puncture.
