>URGENT< petrol LR tune

Hi!

I am starting a cost to coast and back in africa with my petrol 2.2 series III land rover.
As I couldn’t find anyone to proper tune the car after fitting a new carb and new distributor, I am asking if anyone can provide tips for the tune of these engines. Ignition and carb…

I am leaving tomorrow morning, so…

Lightbulb easy

any garage with a strobe light and an emissions unit..dont let them lean it up 2 much as might burn valves, unless it has upgraded valves and seats..basiclly pop down to any friendly mot garage..good luck jake..you should have a timing light and varios marks on your fly/pully drive if you are doing a big overlander and know what 4 which as fuel types may vary..halfords should sell them..

Which carb did you get ? You shouldn't have to do much other than idle adjustments.
Static timing the engine will probably be fine with the correct points gap of course.
If you get some really crappy petrol in Africa or elsewhere and the engine starts to "pink" [or "ping"] a very simple cure is to slacken off the distributor and retard the timing by rotating it a little bit .You then tune the engine "by ear" .
You will be able to hear the difference in the running of the engine as you rotate the distributor .Turn it until the pinging under load cannot be heard.
But before you start you should mark the original position of of the distributor so that you can return it to that position when better fuel is available .

Old Landies are simple reliable machines if you look after them and will run in unbelievable conditions and on the crappiest quality fuel so I shouldn't worry too much if I were you .

Get a manual or see if you can download bits of it .

i have a zenith 361 carb.

how do i now if the mixture is too lean?

probably i wont have time to see the answer prior to departing, but i will try to check up in a net cafe...

Your Carb will be the 361V , it should be jetted correctly if you bought it from a Land Rover specialist .
If the spark plugs are showing a white deposit ,then the mixture is too lean for the rpm range you are running at.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
