Sunroof !!

I've got a Black & Decker, 2 jumbo sunroofs and an itchy finger. The 110 is looking worried.

Before I don the leather mask and start swinging the saw, I was wondering what people's thoughts were of overlanding Africa with holes in the roof. Pro's and cons.

My (possibly half-baked) reasoning is

1: ventilation (esp for sleeping inside)
2: photography/navigation -- (sticking your bonce out the top.)
3: 'connection' with the environment. Which is what it's all about, right?
4: stand up room in the back (we're talking a BIG sunroof)

any thoughts?

Are you talking of glass sunroofs?
If so, I have used them myself.
Recommended for all the reasons you suggest, especially for sleeping in the car.
Canvas sunroof would not be recommended. A monkey (human or otherwise) would be through it in no time.

Hi kitmax,

I'm thinking of installing 2: a largish glass one above the front seats and then a 4ft x 3ft canvas job at the back. (I might just be pining for my old TR7 drophead.)

Like you say, security is a worry, I'm thinking of perhaps configuring some roof bars so that I can lock my ally sand plates above the canvas roof when leaving the vehicle - or when the midday burn gets too much.

Enjoyed reading your travelogues btw

Hi Richard
Your ideas sound great - It will look just like a TR7 when you've finished, just a bit lumpy at the wheel level.
Send me a picture when you are done.
Don't cut through the Land Rover roof- supports unless you reinforce the remaining area.
Glad you enjoyed the website

Why not a hinged aluminium "lid",which can be latched closed? It can be opened 180 deg, and if you want to travel with it open, it can be clipped down flat on the roof if you don't have a rack, or leaned against the roof-load if you do (with a bungee cord, perhaps).

Rgds,

Michael...
