Storage racks
 

I have been looking around for a storage system I can put in the back of a Land Cruiser. I want to get a system of draws two wide and two high that would fill the space behind the back seats to about half the the hight from floor to roof.

I have found a good looking system from an Australian company and they are going to give me price for importing it as a flat pack.

The custum made units for Land Rovers look heavy.

I have found quite a few web sites that make flight cases; the sort of things that bands use to store audio equipment in when on tour. I think flight case materials might be just right for making what I want.

Does anyone have any experience or advice?

These are great links for me.

I am still going to look at flight case materials. I am going off to a workshop in Bristol to look at the materials used. I thinks flight cases are made of 8mm or 12mm ply with extruded aluminium fixers on the box/draw edges.

In the links the guys built draws out of 3/4" ply. Also they used heavy duty draw sliders.

I feel a draw slider google moment coming on.

If you can read kanji [yeah right] I recommend the Yahoo! Japan auction site. All the goodies you could want, the stuff we usually drool over, can be found at really low prices. Shipping might be a problem for larger items of course...

Here in Japan, you can get some amazing deals from the used car part "recycling" shops as well. Today I just snagged a heavy duty aluminium roof rack for the BigHorn, mint condition, for about fifty quid. Nice!

Kanji....Japanese writing using characters borrowed from the Chinese alphabet some 800 years ago. Combined with Hiragana, Katakana, and Romanji, it makes up the complicated Japanese system of written communication.

(No, I don't understand it either.)

But the wife does.....thus the sweet deals. Did I mention I only paid about 1500 pounds for a mint 90 Bighorn turbo-diesel Irmsher R edition, one owner, 80,000 kms?

There are deals to be had in the land of the rising sun, if you like buying used...

Not sure how heavy duty you want to go, but there are some very usefull bits for making concert/gig loudspeakers, suitable for Chucking in and out of vans, in the Maplin catalogue. No runners, but protective corners, hinges, handles, feet etc. Plus also lots of other goodies. End of the world James Bond switch, my personal favourate, but they have useful battery drain protectors and solar panel controlers at resonable prices.
