We use them at work. The older ones, 2003 to say 2006 keep going but they do rot. Having said that they are abused and although they are serviced regularly that’s just the oily bits. The 5 cylinder 2. 9 litre engines have a pretty good reputation apart from the odd blown head gasket. I’m not sure why but they do start to sound like a bag of spanners when they get to this age and say approaching 100k miles though.

The newer ones are very impressive, very refined on the road and I’ve seen them make 110 and 130 Defenders look very silly off road. Ours have 3 lockable diff’s. They are, however, jam packed with electronics. Stability control, traction control, cruise, autobox etc. I've not heard any negatives re. reliability but I'm talking about less than 3 yr old ones now.

Mines just over 3 years old, 40000 miles. Did have some work done just before warranty expired, emissions related. Other then that nothing to report re reliability. Lets see over the next 40000 miles.

Sprinter is not popular in Africa because the metal is too thin and it is built for European roads.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
