Exhaust shops are good
Try your local exhaust shop who have all the gear to bend and weld mounts to steel tube at any angle that you require

Hi fit a snorcle.
If just to save the cleaning of the filter each day! we have a safari and had it facing forward up till Iran then changed it facing to the rear for Pakistan and it reduces the dust dramaticaly. For Australia we will buy a Donaldson spin top for the out back when we get there. |

Is your exeperience based on verifiable facts or just a hunch? I've done a few thousand miles using a donaldson pre-cleaner and would rather say that consumption is related to the type of surface, quality of or amount of fuel on board, rather than a particular type of air filter endpiece? |

A donaldson type cyclone filter top - or indeed Matt's black one are basically doing the same thing i.e. inducing a big swirl of air to eject bigger particles and save the airfilter a bit of work... They are found not only on 'little 4x4s' but also massive plant and machinery, where to be honest if they caused a significant increase in fuel consumption they wouldn't be used!!!
And don't forget that deep water wading is not only about a snorkel... you have to consider how the various components of your vehicle are vented (gearbox/transfer box, axles) as well as the condition of hub seals and any other weak points. You also have to consider your fan and possible ramifications of the fan blades breaking as they try to work like a propellor, or worse bending into the radiator and stuffing that too! Just charging in because you have a snorkel is the last thing you should do! I took a calculated risk 'playing' and it cost me an engine rebuild. If I had been in an expedition or travelling scenario (or even my own vehicle :-) I would not have taken the risk in the first place - I would have driven another route, as a last resort I would have walked the route and put markers so as not to fall into a hole, as in that instance the fellow I was with had almost nil driving experience. The aftermarket standard snorkel ram head was the best for economy, not the best option for dust exclusion Tried a Donaldson precleaner head and the extra restriction/swirling of air definately added noticeably to fuel consumption Tried a washable foam air filter and this had the same effect as the Donaldson head. The compromise solution was to refit the standard snorkel ram head. In most situations this was more than sufficient and a step up from no snorkel at all. No additional fuel consumption was evident. This was far from a scientific test, but the differences were certainly noticeable enough. Glen
