Shoreline fridges

Has anyone got experience with Shoreline fridges? A friend has one on his narrow boat and says it is good.

On a similar topic, has anyone experimented with using small, mains, 'hotel room' fridge running off an inverter? I doubt they're robust without a spring mount but at least would be dead cheap and maybe even easy to replace on the road.

thanks

Chris there's loads of stuff on the Selfbuilder's forum about this and the general view is that it's a no-no. The start-up power load is too high and you need a really big inverter to make it work. When you combine that with the efficiency (inefficiency) of inverters, it can only make sense if you've a big battery bank, loads of solar panels; i.e. a very big truck. But then if you've got a very big truck you can afford the cost of a 12-24V fridge!

Thanks Q, that sums it up very well.

I'm trying to put off visiting Selfbuilders for as long as poss. It's the 'Taklamakan Syndrome...'
