Sealing up a back door
 

Hi all,

I have a 110, but this might apply to any vehicle.

Has anybody come up with a quick and easy way to seal up the back door to avoid dust getting in?

My spare wheel carrier on the rear door has pulled the rear door slightly out of sync with the lock which isn't helping, and I'll put new seals on soon, but would like to know if anybody has come up with a solution?

1. get the spare of the back door
2. close all windows and vents while driving on dusty roads
3. accept dust as part of your life in a land rover in Africa.
4. ductape?

Yes, just keen to avoid having to sleep in 2 inches of the stuff when it's too windy to put the tent up as I've had to do in the past.

Same probs on my disco.I tried another layer of soft foam glued to the gasket.Worked for a while then same again.Robbert is right.The only answer for a Landy is a dust proof sleeping bag!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you considered checking out the draught excluders you can get from the local DIY store?

You can get some quite thick sticky backed foam window/door draught excluders that should do the job - that is what we used to do on combines/tractors to keep the dust out at harvest time - without it it was like working in a dust storm.

Er, no, it was a real problem and I'm having a bash at sorting out the landy in a few weeks and was thinking of doing the rear door seals, but thought there might be a better way. Bigger seals that fit or something.

I have seen one vehicle that had some canvas and velcro over the back door.


I probably would pull a cheap stunt like that if I wasn't sponsoring this forum!!!

Speaking of which, sod off back to Sahara to plug your dvd's mate, we only plug real quality dvd's on this part of the forum ;-p

Although, AS YOU CAN ALSO BUY CHRIS SCOTT'S BOOKS & DVD's FROM WWW.ROAMINGYAK.ORG I guess I shouldn't point out their inferior quality compared to my own product ;-p

Thanks Julian, is that the sought of thing that you normally have on the bottom of a household door to stop a draft and dust from coming in?

Or some kind of long foam with one side sticky?

It usually comes like a roll of tape which is foam with one side of it sticky - usually stuck to the door/window frame and then compressed when you shut the door/window.

It is usually square/oblong in cross section - I have used some in the past about 1cm wide, about 7.5mm high with the sticky back on the bottom - comes in a 5m or 10m roll.

If you are trying to seal a big gap it can be stuck on top of it's self to give you a 15mm compressible seal.

You might be able to get an idea from http://www.tapes-direct.co.uk/foam.php, although it is carried by most DIY shops.

I've used a lot in the past - basically any sort of compressible foam would do - if it isn't sticky backed you can used double sided tape.
