Range Rover Spare Storage

Having just shod my Range Rover classic with 245 R16 70 tyres I have belatedly realised that the spare tyre no longer fits in the "well" in the boot! Its too broad and a little high!

Any clever ideas?

I could buy a roof rack and put it on that - does anyone have any preferences for a Range Rover (classic) roof rack?

Or I could just put a standard spare tyre in the well. The problem with that is they have a different rolling radius. NB I would only use this in an emergency to get to the nearest garage to get a proper repair. Clearly on exped I'll carry the full sized spare and stow it away somewhere appropriate.

Any thoughts?

what about a swing away carrier, check out the landy mags for some leads.

Yeah,as Andy says, try a good sturdy swing away carrier as opposed to putting it up on the roof - use the spare wheel area for parts and service items

I kept a standard sized spare (for emergency emergencies) in the original tyre well and kept the other spare on the roof. The rolling radius difference between 235/70/16 is similar to the standard anyway.

The trouble with the swing away carriers on the rangies is that they don't like corrugations. I've seen some neat fitments that rest the weight of the tyre on the towball. These were on aid vehicles in Burkina Faso - the drivers said the carriers (and rear wing mount) fell apart without it.

Is it not possible to put a plate on the recess it normally sits in and just let it sit there?

Hi - This might help:

I know the classic is different, but same idea - the carrier sits on an extended rear bumper, attahced to the chassis. ARB may make them or Kaymar.
Cheers.

You can bang in the floor where the spare sits, not pretty but it works.

I had a short rack on the back of my 88 Rangie and made my own locakble tire carrier. I don't recommend carrying too much stuff on the roof of your landie but a small rack and spare should be fine.

I have some pics here http://www.imagestation.com/album/pi...1780759&idx=25

Thanks for the suggestions.

I think modifying the existing well or getting a decent rear wheel carrier is the solution.

Anyone know where I can get an ARB or Kaymar rear wheel carrier? - I'm not certain they are still making them.

Hi CTC
I mounted my Range Rover Classic spare wheel on the bonnet, with the help of a Land Rover LWB station-wagon fitting.
I ran a heavy duty 'Dexion' shelving bar underneath to support it.
The system worked well, it was strong and I travelled from Sahara to Scotland and back, all of it off-road.
It cut down visibility a bit (ask that turkey that I ran over...) but basically it WORKED.
I also mounted two spares on a heavy duty chassis-mounted bull bar on another trip - but the top mounting broke on the washboard corrugations coming out of Djanet, and I had to do some serious nut and bolt work through the body shell to secure it again.
