hi
this has been a small concern oif mine especially when choosing dark steel wheels better for rough roads or shiny alloys which ar emore touristy ..

I had a dark green Landie and have driven it all round North Africa it's not a worry. Just laugh and smile when they you get asked about being a military vehicle and interest will fade.

The same goes for military surplus gear; in my experience it's fine but I would not take any kit or vehicle that was in Disruptive Pattern Material (DPM) or painted in camouflage as it's overtly military (IMHO).

Khaki, Olive Drab and browns are fine and a lot of old Safari kit is this colour anyway.

...the problems you have with the DEFENDERS are normally not caused by the color...

@ Lotus

I drive a DEFENDER as well. The locals in Libya mainly use the LAND CRUISERS and strictly no diesel-engines. They were very surprised to see, that their fuel-consumption in the sand was about 3 times higher than mine.

I am happy with the car so far. Except the things we all now about...

I've had no problems so far. But maybe if a dozen were travelling in convoy....!

Aiden,

May I ask what tyre size you have there?
Have you changed the standard axles and flanges with stronger ones to take the extra stain? Like Maxi-drives or simular?

And how was the TDis power with the large tyres? Or have you changed to a bigger intercooler?

Hi Erik,

Tyres are 35x12.5x15" BFG Mud Terrains on 8x15" MJ Lee Mach 5's - see http://www.mjloffroad.co.uk/prodwhee.html. This works well in the sand dispite the mud-biased tread (once you let some air out).

I will get some Maxi-drives however the standard shafts are pretty stong (two years - not broken one yet).

The extra diameter does gear it up a bit. I've just tweaked the diesel pump for some more power. See http://www.lrenthusiastforum.com/ubb...fpart=all&vc=1 for more info.

Cheers,

Aidan
