Interesting choice for a military vehicle, but all those bolts to get a tyre off!! yay gods, just imagine after the studs have been banged about for a few months you'd need a mile long lever to get the nuts off the studs.

Cast vs Forged
 

Just skimming through the Hutchinson web site I think the big difference between these and your standard car manufacturer / after market alloy wheel is that they are forged. Cast alloy IMHO will always be inferior to steel or these (just need to find my anorack now). Get what you pay for and all that.

Spot on with the bolts and damage (they still look the part for posing in Tesco's car park though). Having said that I guess it's not always a good idea to look at military spec stuff and think "that must be top quality and just what I need for off road or overland trips" they have different priorities/back up etc.

I suppose stud damage is an issue with bolttogether rims. But it is the only way to have internal bead locks that can be assembled/dis-assembled in the field. My U500 has 3 piece rims with a spring steel retaining ring. It was supposed to come with thick rubber internal bead locks but MB "forgot" them at the factory. I eventually obtained them but it was impossible to install them even with the boom of a boom truck. The Goodyear truck tire place has an enormous hydraulic press, but I decided if I used that how would a Beaurepairs place in Katherine NT have changed my 2 rear tires in July? Or how would I change a wrecked tire in the middle of nowhere? So I go without bead locks and I am careful about my pressures. I debeaded the fronts once at 14 psi (as low as the CTIS computer lets it go) but I've found it has great flotation on sand at 20 in the front and 32 (computer limit in rear for CTIS system)-40 psi in the rear - safe as far debeading danger.
If one were going to play with single digit psi pressures then internal bead locks, and bolt-together rims to be able to work on them in the field, would be useful.

Don't assume military stuff is top spec. it is usually built to a price, usually a highly inflated price for an item that was wrongly specified in the first place so now doesn't do the job it was needed for!!

Just a quick note on air leakage on alloys. Was having that trouble with my 15 year old 4 Runner. Winter salt causes havoc with alloy. Had all wheels sand blasted and sprayed. They now look like new and don't loose a drop of air. Cost me £225 for the 5 wheels.

bought almost new steels with tyres for my isuzu pickup for 70 quid (ebay)

Old Alloys I'll just scrap them and take the money next time I get rid of a load of metal, tyres i'll sell may even make a profit on the deal :D

Having just done 30,000miles on alloys ,original 15 years old,over Tajikistan, Kazak,Uzbek ,Bam route , and this was over mountains badly graded tracks etc, my alloys have made the grade, just don't drive to fast.
Went with one steel brand new from Toyota, pin ***** in it ,this was with another alloy as extras, hopeless, tried to seal it , just could not. Alloys over steel for me.
