Overland 4X4 Heater

Hi folks,
I'm now the very proud owner of a HJ75 Troopie with pop up roof... awsome truck .. anyway as we'll be touring in Europe for the next years, I need to address the heating or lack of it... whats the correct route to go, onboard diesel heater or electric fan heater....
Diesel sounds most ideal however I worry about fumes, electric could be OK if it doesnt draw too much current.
I have a onboard water tank which heats from the engine, could I use this in some way ?
thanks in advance
Matt

Diesel heater

Hi Matt,

You need a Webasto or Eberspacher diesel heater. They run off your main fuel source and consume very little diesel. And they're quiet. Here's a couple of links.

and
Eberspächer UK - Air Heaters

Electric heating will drain your battery quickly unless you have a mains powere hook-up.

Go Troopie!

I have an Eberspacher DW5 Hydronic heater which is rated as a 5KW heater and is plumbed into the engine of my VW Syncro. It has 3 uses I can preheat the engine and demist the cab. Provide heating in the back of the van using a secondary low current heater matrix and also since the heater is plumbed into the engine if you have a calorifier fitted you will get hot water without starting the engine. I've installed a valve so preheating the engine is optional and it only takes about 5 minutes to get the coolant hot and start kicking out heat in this mode. Powerwise it uses about 3amps when running without the heater fan.

I picked mine up brand new on German Ebay for about £450 about 2 years ago.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
