Nissan Patrol v Toyota

Hello all,

I and four other geology students from the Royal School of Mines at Imperial College London will be doing a 6 week mapping project in Oman next summer (yes, I know it will be VERY hot!).

We'll be renting a 4wd there, and most places seem to have Nissan Patrols or various specs of Toyota. We will be off-tarmac, but not dune bashing. What's better? Confusingly, there are various different types of Landcrusier!

Frankly I don't believe it really matters, as long as you have a shovel on board

Both are ideal for the trip. Will all of you be in one vehicle? If so very cramped!
Oman is absolutely fabulous and an Aladdins Cave for budding geologists(forgive the pun)!
I assume you will have an experienced peron with you.If not you are at serious risk because of the temperatures and risk of isolation for whatever reason.
Drinking water and at least two spare wheels and tyres will be your main concerns.Oman is largely rock rather than sand and the tyres take a real hammering.Oh,and by the way take DIY gloves because everthing you touch will be red hot!!

Thanks Tony, useful advice there. We will have an experienced supervisor from the local university, and I'm not a stranger to the climate of Arabia, so proper precautions regarding the weather will be taken. It now appears that the majority of our driving will be on-road anyway, so hopefully we aren't off road too much.

or you could try these!! they are what the guys in iraq use as they protect your hands from hot objects (and hostile locals!) while leaving you with good dexterity
