Multiple fuel tanks, pumping speed?
 

Hey,

I'm planning to install TD5 90's fuel tank on my 300TDI 90 as second fuel tank.

Can anyone share some light, about how long it takes to pump fuel from one tank to another with the factory in-tank fuel pump (50-60 litres tank)?

I think the first stage is at about 180L/Hour, so it will take about 20 minutes to pump it all.

I have been keeping my eyes out for a used Td5 tank to do the same, but may try and use a pump with a higher flow rate, as it is a bit slow - also may custom make the bracket and cover for the tank as the Land Rover one is quite big and heavy.

Why pump it, why not put in a switched valve so your tanks are totally independant. I've ha one on my 101 for about 4 years now and it works great to switch between the 2 side tanks

Andy at Allisport (www.allisport.com) makes a tank to fit where the td5 tank goes, for earlier 90's if you get bored waiting for one

Yeah, theres a few ways to do the fuel system, its what works best for each vehicle, I was going to use the in tank pump as there is already one fitted in the Td5 tank and its quite easy to do.
I met Andy (Allisport)at Sodbury last year and had a look at the tank I thought it sat quite low an the feed was a bit exposed - Not sure if I want an Ally tank either... also it was about £300 with a filler neck and fittings -which is why I went to WA with 2 jerrycans on the roofrack !

Being a tight git I can do it with used OE parts for half the price and using a OE filler recessed correctly it will look a lot better job. Though like you say youve got to look for the tank....

Ive Met Kathy, but not Jon - though heard of him, were always dotted about the globe, so didnt meet up too much apart from back at HQ near Ipswich.

What other mods have you done to your FC and what block are you running ?

I have this mod on my 90. 20 minutes to fill the original tank sounds about right - using the integrated TD5 pump.

This was the least faf option, and saved some $$$, the only caveat is the TD5 tank is bigger than the original one, so you have to pay attention when you're transferring.

It's a great mod, I get about 600+ miles range mixed driving with it.

My 101 has a 300tdi.

The battery box has gone to make room for a 170 litre tank and the origional fuel tank has been replaced by a 100 litre tank (Andy of Allisport is a mate of mine hence the 2 ally tanks) + a jerrycan holder from a bedford MK that holds 2 cans

Mods for this year include putting air helper springs on the front and converting to PAS. And gonna swap some of the back windows so they can be opened

I run the beastie on Unimog wheels + tyres as there easier to get than 900x16's and alot cheaper

Rear axle has a detroit locker

Camper converted in the back. Sink, minus 40 fridge, double bed , gas cooker etc.

Did you use all OE for the mod or did you adapt anything - for instance the mounting frame and cover plate ?

Sounds a nice piece of kit, thats a good amount of diesel to have for a long stage. How does the 300 pull with the large wheel/tyres ? what weight are you at and what k/pl are you getting on piste ?

I have a few more technical (beginner) questions about this TD5 tank setup, if you don't mind.

From paper I see that the TD5 in-tank pump has 4 hoses, it first pumps throught a sedimentor and then back to the pump and then from the pump to the engine.

What I have in my mind is a simple setup like this: I just pump from TD5 tank to the filler neck of the original tank. I have a sedimentor between the original tank and the engine, so it then will basically work for 2 tanks.

I'm not sure how exactly the TD5's 4-hose fuel pump works. Can I just make loopback hose instead of the original sedimentor ring or can I only use just 1 hose for outgoing fuel? Or, what is the best pump for my idea? I probably will need to buy it and the tank new since used is usually not available in my area.

And am I right with my guess that I need to remove fuel filler cap when pumping? http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/wink.gif

I, ahem, "supervised" the work, so can't remember exactly, but I think there was a small bracket made up and the exhaust was re-routed (with a bit of flexi-tube). The TD5 tanks gets in the way of the exhaust brackets. Just minor stuff IIRC. Oh, and the filler was a bit bodged to fit too.

It connects fine, though we gave up on adding a sedimenter as it was too much hassle. I swapped the fuel caps for vented ones. After breaking the non-vented ones...

The engine pulls the truck very well

I get 20-24 mpg on the road , drops to 14 mpg or so on the piste (still more than the old V8 on the road!)
