preparing hzj75 for rally

hi all
i,m planning to join rally of egypt

i have a t.l.c hzj75 year 1995 i,m looking for suspenssions ,left kit ,and after market parts to make my car in good condition to rally ,i just want to finish the more than 3000 k.m in the rally ,(not looking to win it of course ,specially i wil not have that much money to spend on the car after the entry fees ,supporting team and car )

i must fit saftey bar with 6 points attached to the car body ,any ideas??

is there any special after market fuel filter for the 1hz 4,2 diesel engine ?

what else i can make for gear box and mechanical work for the car
sorry for my silly quists and thanks for any ideas

Hi Omar,

I'm no expert and somebody with real knowledge can say better, however, in terms of GEARBOX, i tell you what I have been doing. In desert conditions, the LR gearbox gets very hot, so to help the guy, I used synthetic multi-grade from farm tractors (70-140 I think) with some gearbox good additive.

FILTER: toyota gibraltar sells some very nice filters.

Personal comment: I live in the country where it can be pretty dusty and fuel not so good. I find the use of a good fuel additive helps engine run better. Less smoke, more economy, I buy it by the liter use it very often and always take some to desert trips.

But again, somebody else may know if those are a good thing to do or not

Be careful with improvements.

I'm near Barcelona, a few sailing days a way from you. In Spain, which is slowly becoming a desert.

Hope you can get good advise in suspensions upgrade. Sorry, I'm only familiar with series land rovers. In an old LR you can upgrade the exhaust manifold and the exhaust, getting a few welcomed horse power. In your engine you can even add the turbo.

What else: new clutch, harder shocks, underbody 160 lts tank, Sahara Overland book, an Engel full of belgium .


I'm sure there are people in this web quite knowledgeable with HZJ75 upgrades.

if you want real desert ,come to egypt ,andv you will see that land cruiser is beter than landys

Hi Omar,

Whenever preparing for an event such as this, the safest bet is to follow the FIA regulations as many of the Cross Country Rally events fall under them.

As far as preparation is concerned, don't bother with lift kits, but do invest in a good set of shocks and springs.

I can't help you with Toyota bits and pieces, but if you want a complete car ours is for sale! Vehicle sold - link removed.

Hi Omar,
I would echo Marks advice. Springs and shocks (OME or similar get rated fairly highly, Koni shocks are also fairly well regarded). Could well be that if you only want to finish then the best thing is leave it as is!!
I would be a bit wary of more or fancier fuel filters - or if you do go down that route then you might have to instal a pump to pressurise the fuel system as the injection pump may have problems if the filtration is too much! For the roll cage I have no idea sorry, probably you just have to get one made? Can't imagine it is often done and therefore available...
