LWB Suzuki Sierra

Does anyone have any experience of using a suitably equipped long wheel base Suzuki Sierra for desert travel? I'm shortly planning to visit Australia (slightly out of area I know!) with a view to checking out the central and southern deserts. I've looked into shipping my 1993 V8 110 Defender from Jordan, where I've been based for the past couple of years, but it looks like being a financial non-starter, as well as a lot of hassle. I'm therefore planning to buy a vehicle once I get over there, and as I can't afford a Landcruiser (my budget's only about A$5000...sigh) was wondering whether a LWB Suzuki might be a feasible, albeit smaller, alternative? I'd be really grateful for any comments or suggestions.

5000 australian wont buy you much of a 4-wheeler at all! I know I bought one there once!

It depends on the terrain you’ll be traveling in. The Suzuki is a good car in general but the engine is a bit on the week side. If you’ll be loading up the zuk to the rim and travel in hard to drive in environment, you’ll have a face a few problems. A friend of mine had a zuk in Egypt. When empty or lightly loaded it did well in the dunes. Once loaded, the snatch strap came out a lot.

Snatch strap? I thought they went out in the middle ages!

Middle Ages? Not really, people use them all the time. I travel with both a winch and sand mats but I still use the snatch strap often. What do you use?
