leaded fuel

considering the lack of availability of unleaded fuel on an overland journey down the east side of africa, is it adviseable to use leaded petrol in an unleaded engine. i know it can be done for short periods of time, but what about a prolonged journey?

any help much appreciated

You will definitely destroy the lambda probe and any catalytic converter. The catalytic converter will recover somehow if you use leaded fuel three of four times only, but it's adviseable to have both parts removed before and refitted after return (ok, it may be illegal in theory - like driving with damaged emission control systems).

But check out if the vehicle is running well without Lambda signal - some engines/the fuel metering systems go to "limp home" mode and are not nice to drive.

Peter

hi

We have a V8 petrol engine in a series 3 landy.

We are basicaly following the alantic route with dsome detors . . .

Are we going to stuggle to find unleaded petrol?
Can we use leaded instead as we have no catalytic converter?
should we abandon the idea of a V8 and choose a desiel instead - if so which would be best??

Please help . . .
